NCEL Weekend Review
13th November, 2006
Pontefract Collieries provided the biggest shock in the League Cup as they dumped Premier Division leaders Maltby Main out of the competition.
The midtable Division One side won 2-0 at Muglet Lane with goals from Kevin Duckworth and Craig Forrest in the opening fifteen minutes of the game.
Nostell Miners Welfare also upset the odds by beating their Premier Division visitors Sheffield in a dramatic encounter.
All the goals in a 3-2 win came in the second half as Nostell took a two goal lead through goals from Danny Highley and Ben Gilbert.
Sheffield fought back to draw level with seven minutes remaining thanks to Vill Powell and Chris Dolby.
But, Nostell had the final say as Gilbert grabbed his second and the winner in injury-time.
Meanwhile, Staveley Miners Welfare were also able to adopt the "giantkiller" tag as they also saw off Premier Division opposition.
They beat Glasshoughton Welfare 2-0 at home with goals from Jamie Smith and Gary Eades.
Teversal, however, could not make it a clean sweep for Division One against the Premier Division as they were beaten 3-0 by visitors Glapwell.
Ian Streather, Ian Brown and Craig Gaunt claimed the goals for the Hall Corner side.
The most dramatic of the eight all-Premier ties came at Mill Lane where the clash between Pickering Town and Retford United went to penalties.
Will Tomlinson had opened the scoring for Retford early on and they held their lead until the 80th minute when Liam Salt grabbed the Pikes' equaliser.
The game went into extra-time and Ricky Greening put the hosts ahead before the Badgers forced the shoot-out in the last seconds through Karl Colley.
Pickering scored all their penalties whilst Retford's John Knapper had his attempt saved and Will Tomlinson missed the final spot-kick to send the hosts through.
A first-half barrage from Mickleover Sports saw them progress 3-0 at Arnold Town as a Gary Wright own goal, plus strikes from Channon North and Jamie Barrett came before the interval to end the Eagles challenge.
And, another last-minute goal, this time from Hallam's Lee Winfindale saw them go through 3-2 at Brodsworth Welfare.
Shirebrook Town managed to score their first goal in five matches at home to Eccleshill United but the Premier Division's bottom side bowed out of the competition.
Andy Jones' strike levelled matters after Matt Dempsey had put the visitors ahead but second-half goals from Luke Hudson and Dempsey saw Eccleshill win 3-1.
Carlton Town beat visitors Thackley in the biggest victory of the day.
Martin Ball, Dean Gent, Chris Atkins, Daniel Blair and John Peel all grabbed a goal each in a 5-1 win.
First-half strikes from Tom Adams and Joe Connor helped Selby Town progress 2-1 at home to Armthorpe Welfare whilst Garforth Town went into the Third Round with the same scoreline against visitors Sutton Town.
In the four all-Division One encounters, there were wins for Winterton Rangers, Parkgate, Lincoln Moorlands and Hall Road Rangers.
Winterton and Hall Road both went through with 4-2 victories.
Two from Danny Clarke and one each from Ross Haywood and Andy Holt helped Winterton see off Yorkshire Amateur.
And, Hall Road had Andy Jacklin, Paul Farley, Jamie Barnwell and Adam Walker to thank for their win against Worsbrough Bridge.
A Brian Cusworth hat-trick led Parkgate to a comfortable 3-0 win at Dinnington Town whilst Sam Saunders scored both Lincoln Moorlands goals in their 2-1 win at Tadcaster Albion.
One game will have to be re-arranged as Liversedge's clash at home to Long Eaton United was abandoned halfway through the second period due to a waterlogged pitch with Sedge leading 2-0.
In league action, there were two matches in Division One.
Borrowash Victoria boss Tony Marsden quit after his side's 2-0 home defeat to bottom side AFC Emley.
An Allan Laud penalty in the opening minute of the second half and an Adrian Smith strike in injury time moved the visitors up three places to fourteenth, one above the Vics.
Assistant manager Mark Wilson takes over at the helm of the Robinson Construction Bowl team, their third manager so far in a turbulent season.
There are happier times, however, for their Derbyshire rivals South Normanton Athletic.
The Lees Lane outfit glided into the top five of the table with a 6-1 home win over Rossington Main.
A Joe Atkinson penalty, and goals from Matthew Baxter and Valadmir Santos Farrell saw them three-up with just 39 minutes gone.
Main had a flicker of hope as Paul Bradley pulled one back on the stroke of half-time.
But, Athletic proved irresistible in the second period as James Parkinson added his name to the scoresheet, Farrell grabbed his second on the hour and Atkinson converted another spot-kick on 72 minutes to complete the rout.
