NCEL Weekend Review
20th November, 2006
Five NCEL sides have made it through to the last 64 of the FA Vase following Second Round action at the weekend.
Four of them used home advantage to progress on a day when the vast majority of the fourteen teams from our league were on their travels.
Glasshoughton Welfare and Thackley defeated visitors from the North West Counties League.
An Ashley Brewer strike nineteen minutes from time sent Welfare through against Atherton Collieries 2-1.
The away side had just levelled through Jermaine Peters after a James Parkinson own goal had put the hosts ahead.
And, an injury time goal for Andy Howland saw Thackley progress at the expense of Squires Gate.
The Dennyfield outfit had gone into the last ten minutes 2-1 down before Dean Walters gave the home supporters hope with an equaliser and the dramatic finale saw them claim a 3-2 win.
Meanwhile, Retford United and Winterton Rangers overcame stubborn resistance against lower-ranked visitors.
Retford were given a scare by Central Midland League leaders Rainworth Miners Welfare who were ahead by half-time through Michael Sisson.
But, the Badgers made their higher position tell in the second half, Ben Chambers and Mick Godber with the goals in a 2-1 win.
And, Rangers progressed 3-1 against West Cheshire League side Ashville but had to wait until the last minute to be sure of their place in the Third Round.
David Ricardo had put them ahead from the penalty spot on 26 minutes but Ian McPadden drew Ashville level seven minutes later, also with a spot kick.
Andy Holt quickly regained the advantage for the West Street outfit but it remained a tight affair until Andy Catton added the third late-on.
The NCEL's sole away success came in Staffordshire where Gedling Town beat North West Counties side Newcastle Town 2-0, with Ady Francis and a Matthew Turner penalty putting them through.
Other than that, it was disappointing day for the remaining sides left in the competition.
Carlton Town were beaten 2-1 at home to Midland Alliance outfit Coalville Town despite taking an early lead through Steve Chaplin.
Their visitors surged back in the last ten minutes with Richard Saunders converting an 81st-minute penalty and then adding a vital second as the game went into injury time.
The other eight NCEL sides unfortunately tasted defeat away from home with only Arnold Town and Parkgate finding the back of the net.
Arnold went down 2-1 at Midland Alliance side Barwell - Chris Freestone's 46th-minute equaliser proving not to be enough as Reece Lester grabbed a winner from the home side on 67.
And, Parkgate's remarkable season so far came to a crashing halt at North West Counties outfit Curzon Ashton.
David Taylor got them a goal ten minutes from time but, by then, the contest was over as they fell 7-1.
The biggest surprise involved South Normanton Athletic who went down 3-0 at Midland Combination side Castle Vale.
Sheffield were edged out by a single goal at Northern League Durham City whilst Garforth Town went down 3-0 at Durham's league rivals Consett and Liversedge were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle Blue Star.
Runaway Midland League leaders Leamington proved too strong for Sutton Town as they knocked out Lee Wilson's side, 4-0.
And, Pickering Town bowed out of the competition by the same scoreline at North West Counties side, Flixton.
There was plenty of league action with ten games, four of them in the Premier Division.
And, the biggest scoreline came at Hall Corner where Glapwell ran out 8-2 winners over fellow mid-table outfit Eccleshill United.
The result is all the more surprising as the game was still in the balance with twelve minutes remaining.
James Hanson had put the visitors ahead after just three minutes but Adam Moran quickly drew Glapwell level and Ian Brown and Steve Roebuck gave the hosts a comfortable 3-1 half-time lead.
But, Chris Rosindale halved the deficit with a penalty immediately after the interval and Eccleshill dominated the game until a remarkable finale.
Substitute Craig Housley grabbed two, Colin Cockerill also claimed a brace and Craig Gaunt also got on the scoresheet to give Glapwell their biggest ever victory in the NCEL.
They move up to eleventh, Eccleshill fall to twelfth.
Elsewhere, it was not a good day for Maltby Main as the league leaders went down 4-2 at Hallam.
Billy Rowley and Phil Reynolds had the hosts two-up after 26 minutes before Tommy Fletcher and Liam Kay pulled Main level.
But, it was the Sandygate side who would prevail with John Drennan putting them back ahead on the hour mark and James Tevendale making sure of the points that move Hallam up to eighth with thirteen minutes left.
Maltby remain four points clear of chasing pack as the three sides behind them, Sheffield, Selby Town and Retford, were either in Vase action or without a game.
Mickleover Sports move up to fifth with a 4-1 home win over struggling Brodsworth Welfare.
Long Eaton United were the only away winners in the Premier Division with a 2-0 victory at Armthorpe Welfare that sees them climb to tenth.
In Division One, with Winterton and Parkgate playing in the Vase, Nostell Miners Welfare took the opportunity to consolidate their third position with a 2-0 win at Tadcaster Albion.
Ben Gilbert with a 29th-minute strike and Darren Rushton on 65 claimed the victory that puts a four-point gap between themselves and fourth-placed Gedling Town, although all the sides around Nostell have games in hand.
Staveley Miners Welfare have climbed to fifth after a 3-0 win at Rossington Main, a Jamie Smith brace helping them on the way to a comfortable victory.
And, Lincoln Moorlands are now in the top half of the table after beating hosts Teversal 4-2, a defeat that leaves the Carnarvon Street side in thirteenth.
Yorkshire Amateur pulled themselves away from the bottom three with a 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Borrowash Victoria whilst Dinnington Town are now eleventh as a Liam Cartledge double, including a penalty, saw them win by the same scoreline at home to Worsbrough Bridge.
Town go above Hall Road Rangers who lost 2-1 at tenth-placed Pontefract Collieries.
