NCEL Midweek Review

22nd November, 2006

Goals in the first ten minutes by Darryl Winter and Gavin Smith saw Sheffield keep the pressure on top side Maltby Main.

The early double strike at Armthorpe Welfare to claim a 2-0 victory means they are now just a point behind the Premier Division leaders and with two games in hand whilst Welfare remain sixteenth.

That was the only league action in midweek with the remaining five games all knockout affairs.

Long Eaton United booked a place at home to Parkgate in the Third Round of the League Cup as they beat hosts Liversedge on penalties.

The home side had taken the lead through an Adam Burton own goal just before half-time but Aidan Brady levelled matters on 55 minutes.

It remained 1-1 after extra-time and United went through 3-2 on spot kicks.

Elsewhere, it was Derbyshire Senior Cup action and none of the NCEL sides could claim giantkiller status as they were all beaten by sides higher than themselves in the Non-League Pyramid.

Mickleover Sports came the closest as they took Conference North outfit Alfreton Town into extra-time at Station Road.

Tony Law had put them ahead on the brink of half-time but David Reeves equalised on 49 minutes.

Matt Glass and Andy Tiday struck in the first three minutes of extra-time to claim a 3-1 victory.

South Normanton Athletic, meanwhile, were beaten 3-0 at home to Matlock Town whilst Staveley Miners Welfare and Borrowash Victoria could not pick anything up at UniBond League sides.

Both sides went behind before grabbing an equaliser - Jamie Smith for Staveley at Gresley Rovers and John Guy for Borrowash at Ilkeston Town.

But, they could not build on that, as Welfare went down 3-1 and the Vics lost 4-1.

All those games took place on Tuesday whilst the only fixture scheduled for Wednesday, the Derbyshire Senior Cup clash between local rivals Glapwell and Shirebrook Town, was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
