NCEL Midweek Review

6th December, 2006

Retford United have moved up to second in the NCEL Premier Division after a 2-1 win at fellow promotion hopefuls, Selby Town, on Wednesday.

Mark Ashton had given the Badgers a half-time lead before Peter Duffield doubled the visitors' advantage from the penalty spot on 53 minutes.

Steve Davey pulled one back just after the midway mark of the second period but Retford hung on for three vital points.

They are now two points behind leaders Sheffield but with a game in hand.

On Tuesday night, one match was postponed as Liversedge versus Long Eaton United fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.

And, Sutton Town will have wished their game at Glasshoughton Welfare had been called off as they fell to a single-goal defeat.

Danny King got the goal for Welfare with six minutes remaining to make it three wins out of their last four matches as their renaissance continues.

They move up to fifteenth in the table, two places behind Sutton Town who have now failed to win in their last seven games in all competitions.

Meanwhile, in Tuesday night's friendly, Arnold Town defeated hosts Radford.

Goals from Chris Freestone and Richard Jeffrey gave them a 2-1 win over the Central Midlands side.
