NCEL Weekend Review
10th December, 2006
Glasshoughton Welfare and Retford United have made it through to the last 32 of the FA Vase.
Both were 4-3 home winners in their Third Round ties played on Saturday.
Welfare overcame stubborn opposition from fellow NCEL side Winterton Rangers as the Premier Division side had to come from behind in the last six minutes to beat the Division One leaders.
Nigel Croad and Stuart Dove had put the hosts two-up after half-an-hour and seemingly on their way to a comfortable victory.
However, Mark Whitehouse quickly pulled one back and things looked to have turned around on the 75 minute mark when Andy Holt equalised and, nine minutes later, Rob Northen put Rangers ahead.
But, with two minutes remaining Alex Higgins brought Welfare back level and Dove added a dramatic injury time winner to send the home side through.
It was almost as tense at Cannon Park as, in front of a crowd of 409, Retford edged out their Northern League visitors, Shildon.
The away side took the lead halfway through the first period before Mick Godber levelled on 42 minutes but Shildon regained their advantage just before the interval.
Retford rallied in the second half with goals from Ryan Ford and Ben Chambers putting them ahead and Godber grabbing his second six minutes from time to make it 4-2.
Shildon pulled one back in injury time but the Badgers held on to go into Monday?s draw.
It was not such a happy day though for Gedling Town as they went out of the competition, beaten 2-0 at home by Northern League side West Auckland Town.
After the game, Gedling parted company with their manager, Gary Hayward.
And, despite goals from Dean Walters and Andy Howland, Thackley went down 4-2 at Midland Alliance side Barwell.
In League action, Sheffield tightened their grip on the top of the table with a 5-0 home win over struggling Brodsworth Welfare.
A hat-trick for David Wilkins, making his debut following his move from Arnold Town in midweek, helped them open a five-point gap from the rest.
That?s because Retford, in second, were on FA Vase duty and third-placed Maltby Main were destroyed at home by Glapwell who move up into six.
Glapwell boss Les McJannet called the first 25 minutes the best he had ever witnessed as a manager as his team raced into a five-goal lead thanks to two goals from Ian Brown and one each for Steve Roebuck, Colin Cockerill and Aaron Shelley.
Surprisingly, though, that is where the scoring ended until the final two minutes when Justin Burdett grabbed a sixth for Glapwell as the visitors claimed the biggest away win of the season in the Premier Division, 6-0.
Hallam remain fourth with a single-goal victory over visitors Mickleover Sports, Scott Bates with the solitary strike on 74 minutes.
And, Carlton move up to fifth with a 2-1 win over Garforth Town as Selby Town, who did not have a game, dropped to seventh.
At the other end of the table, Shirebrook Town closed the gap on Brodsworth to three points with a goalless draw at home to local rivals Sutton Town.
The game ended slightly later than the rest of the day?s action due to a brief stoppage for floodlight failure.
Long Eaton United picked up a comfortable 4-1 home win over Armthorpe Welfare, Ian Buick grabbing a couple for the home side to move them into eleventh.
And, the points were shared in the Premier Division?s other two games as Arnold Town grabbed a late equaliser to claim a point at home to Liversedge whilst Eccleshill United and Pickering Town shared four goals at Plumpton Park.
Parkgate took advantage of Winterton being in Vase action to take over from them at the helm of Division One.
Adam Fretwell grabbed the winner four minutes from time in an enthralling 3-2 victory at home to Tadcaster Albion.
There were comfortable victories at home for the sides in third and fourth, meanwhile.
Nostell Miners Welfare were 5-0 winners over Pontefract Collieries with a brace from Ben Gilbert and one each from Dave Watts, Matthew Wilkinson and Craig Stephens.
And, South Normanton Athletic beat Borrowash Victoria 3-0 at Lees Lane thanks to goals from Adam Newton, Kevin Mabon and Matthew Baxter.
Staveley Miners Welfare moved up into fifth with a 2-1 win at home to Rossington Main after two first-half goals from Ben Kistell.
Elsewhere, Teversal?s renaissance continued with a 2-0 victory at Worsbrough Bridge, the only away winners of the day in Division One.
The other two games went the way of the hosts as Hall Road Rangers won by a single goal against AFC Emley and Lincoln Moorlands beat Yorkshire Amateur 4-2.
