NCEL Weekend Review
17th December, 2006
Two late goals in the space of a minute saw Sheffield extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division to eight points.
They came away from Sutton Town with the victory in a game the hosts deserved to win.
Sutton had gone ahead through Richard Jeffrey after ten minutes and it looked as though they would get the three points until Vill Powell on 84 minutes and Chris Dolby barely sixty seconds later snatched the victory for Sheffield.
It was one of only four games played in the Premier Division as the bad weather decimated the programme.
Hallam moved up to third with a 2-2 draw at Glasshoughton Welfare.
The hosts ended with nine men in a dramatic encounter that saw Paul Stevenson give them the lead on 15 minutes.
James Tevendale levelled early in the second half and the visitors had to come from behind again with a spot kick from Scott Bates after Stuart Dove had put Welfare back ahead.
Former leaders Maltby Main fell to fourth as they suffered their fourth successive defeat.
They were beaten 1-0 at Garforth Town, Duncan Williams with the strike for Simon Clifford's men on 35 minutes.
And, in the only other game played in the top flight, bottom side Shirebrook Town were easily beaten 5-1 at Mickleover Sports.
New signing Vladmir Santos Farrell had brought Shirebrook back level on 36 minutes after an opener for the home side from Jamie Barrett.
But, the visitors' resistance crumbled after the interval as Tony Law grabbed two, Channon North added his name to the scoresheet, and Barrett claimed his second to move Mickleover up into sixth.
Meanwhile, all seven scheduled games went ahead in Divison One with the top four sides all winning.
Parkgate kept their noses in front with a 2-1 win at Tadcaster Albion.
Brian Cusworth and Matt Outram got first half strikes for them, a goal in-between for the hosts was scored by Rob Ellis.
Second-placed Winterton Rangers remain the only undefeated side following a 4-2 victory at home to AFC Emley.
Andy Catton, David Ricardo with a penalty, Rob Northen and Greg Archer claimed the win, whilst Allan Laud scored both of Emley's goals, one also from a spot-kick.
Nostell Miners Welfare won by the same scoreline at Pontefract Collieries despite going behind in the sixth minute.
John Forrest put the Colls ahead but Ben Gilbert and an Andy Smith own goal meant the visitors were leading by the break.
Chris Shaw levelled matters in the opening minute of the second period but the game was sealed through John Coppinger and Craig Stephens.
South Normanton Athletic, in fourth, made it six straight wins with a 2-0 victory at Borrowash Victoria thanks to a double from Kevin Mabon, one in each half.
Lincoln Moorlands took advantage of a day of rest for Staveley Miners Welfare by taking fifth place from the Derbyshire side, winning by a single goal at Yorkshire Amateur.
Gedling Town drop to seventh after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to the side now in eighth, Hall Road Rangers.
The hosts looked well on the way to victory with goals from Carl Horder and Matthew Turner but, in the last ten minutes, Mike Gibson and Darren Wilson drew Rangers level to claim an unlikely point.
And, Worsbrough Bridge move up to ninth after a 1-1 draw at Teversal who remain in twelfth.
