NCEL Weekend Review
31st December, 2006
Sheffield's gap at the top of the NCEL remained at ten points after a decimated fixture list on Saturday.
Only four matches in the Premier Division survived the recent bad weather, whilst Sutton Town's home game with Thackley was called off after 65 minutes and will be replayed.
Sheffield picked up their ninth away win of the season but it was a tight affair at bottom side Shirebrook Town.
A Chris White strike on the hour mark separated the sides at Langwith Road to give the leaders their eighth consecutive win.
Shirebrook, meanwhile, have not won in twelve games but improved performances in recent weeks will give them hope for the weeks to come.
With Retford United's game off at home to Carlton Town and Hallam not in action, the onus was on Mickleover Sports to make sure Sheffield's lead did not increase.
And, they claimed a fine 3-1 victory at Glasshoughton Welfare to move up to second.
Jamie Barrett and Sean Gummer had put them two-up in the first half-hour before Gareth Liversedge pulled one back before the interval.
But, a Mark Blount penalty on 60 minutes saw them pick up all three points whilst Glasshoughton Welfare remain in fifteenth.
Garforth Town have moved up into sixth place with a 2-1 home win over Arnold Town.
Luke Musson had put the Eagles ahead before the hosts turned the match around in the second half with goals from Bret Renshaw and Dan Sheriffe.
And, Eccleshill United are now in seventh after picking up a point at next-to-bottom side Brodsworth Welfare.
Darren Fletcher scored with eleven minutes remaining to pick up the point for the visitors.
There was only one postponement in Division One with Teversal's home game with leaders Parkgate called off just before kick-off.
Winterton Rangers cut the gap to just two points with a 3-0 home win over Dinnington Town with two goals from Andy Holt and a last-minute strike from Callum Dransfield.
They replace Nostell Miners Welfare in second place who lost 3-2 at struggling Yorkshire Amateur.
Carl Ward, Darren Leech and Ashley Beck got the goals that meant the Ammers moved up one spot to sixteenth, swapping places with Borrowash Victoria who lost 2-1 at home to fifth-placed Lincoln Moorlands.
South Normanton Athletic, in fourth, claimed their seventh successive win with a 3-0 home victory over Hall Road Rangers.
Adam Newton scored twice, with a Simon Johnson strike in between, to claim the three points comfortably whilst Hall Road drop to tenth.
Gedling Town are up into sixth as new signing Paddy Sneath scored an injury-time winner in a dramatic 3-2 victory at home to Staveley Miners Welfare who, at the start of play, occupied that position.
At the bottom of the table, Rossington Main's misery continued with a 6-0 home drubbing by Worsbrough Bridge.
A Craig Wilkinson hat-trick, two from Richard Elson and an injury-time goal from Matt Neesam condemned Main to their seventh straight defeat.
Meanwhile, Pontefract Collieries moved up to ninth having come from two goals down to win 3-2 at AFC Emley.
Wayne James and Kieran Ryan had put the hosts in a great position before Chris Shaw got one back before half-time for Ponte.
Chris Coupe and Kevin Duckworth then struck in the second period to give Colls the perfect end to 2006.
