NCEL Weekend Review
15th January, 2007
There is no change in the top or bottom six of the NCEL Premier Division after Saturday's action.
But, Sheffield's gap at the summit of the table has grown to twelve points after a comprehensive 4-0 home victory over lowly Thackley.
Gary Townsend got them off to a quick start with a goal in the second minute before Darryl Winter doubled their advantage before half-time.
David Wilkins and Vill Powell added to the tally in the second period to make it a ten game unbeaten now for Dave McCarthy?s side.
Mickleover Sports remain second despite dropping points in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Liversedge.
The hosts had gone two-up after just thirteen minutes thanks to a Nick Heinemann penalty and a goal from Jordan Maltas.
Sports pulled one back from the spot through Mark Blount but Ryan Buckley restored the two-goal lead for Sedge before the break.
However, the visitors roared back into the game in the second half and took the lead thanks to a Channon North strike and a Dave Middleditch brace.
But, Liversedge earned a point in the titanic struggle with an equaliser from Tom Holroyde twelve minutes from time that leaves them in thirteenth.
Closing in on Sports are third-placed Retford United who won 6-2 at home to Arnold Town with four of their goals coming from Mick Godber whilst Karl Colley and Adam Kerley added to the scoreline.
Ashley Harrison and Mark Clarke scored late goals for the Eagles as they stay in sixteenth position.
Garforth Town and Maltby Main remain fourth and fifth, respectively, as both picked up maximum points from their games.
Garforth won convincingly 4-0 at home to Hallam with two goals from Jason St Juste in the first half whilst Shane Kelsey and Bret Renshaw made sure after the interval.
And, an Ashley Longstaff penalty six minutes into the second half claimed a single-goal victory for Maltby Main at Selby Town who drop to tenth.
Glapwell stay sixth despite having their home match with Glasshoughton Welfare called off.
It was one of two matches that succumbed to a waterlogged pitch, the other being Sutton Town?s clash with Long Eaton United.
At the foot of the table, Shirebrook Town remain bottom but have closed the gap between themselves and Brodsworth Welfare to a single point.
They were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Eccleshill United as Chris Rhodes and Andy Jones had seemingly given Shirebrook the victory after Luke Hudson had opened the scoring for the visitors.
But, Darren Fletcher grabbed the equaliser with twelve minutes remaining for ninth-placed Eccleshill.
Brodsworth were, meanwhile, thumped 4-1 at Carlton Town who climbed up to seventh with that victory.
And, Adam Lee's 35th-minute goal earned the points for Armthorpe Welfare at home to Pickering Town, opening up a nine-point gap between themselves in seventeenth and the bottom three.
In Division One, things went very much to form in the clash between the bottom and top sides.
Parkgate cantered to a 5-0 win at Rossington Main who are now nine points adrift of the rest, thanks to a Lee Squires brace, an Adam Fretwell penalty and further strikes from Paul Clayton and Brian Cusworth.
Their lead at the top is now six points over the new side in second, South Normanton Athletic.
The Lees Lane outfit took advantage of a blank day for Winterton Rangers to move up with a 2-0 home win over Staveley Miners Welfare.
Kevin Mabon grabbed both goals to keep Athletic's surge up the table going.
A recent dip in form for Nostell Miners Welfare continued with a 2-0 defeat at Borrowash Victoria.
They remain fourth but are now only one point ahead of Lincoln Moorlands who, through a Nick Robinson penalty and goals from Chris McDonald and Rob Lund, claimed a 3-0 win at Hall Road Rangers.
Strikes from Dean Shirt and Richard Elson saw Worsbrough Bridge claim a top-six spot at the expense of their hosts, Gedling Town.
Ady Francis grabbed the Nottinghamshire side?s only goal of the game as they lost 2-1.
A Stefan Zoll hat-trick helped Tadcaster Albion to a 4-1 victory at Teversal after the hosts had gone ahead early on through Lee Rhodes.
Taddy are now eighth whilst the Tevie Boys remain in fourteenth.
Yorkshire Amateur picked up a morale-boosting 2-0 home victory over AFC Emley whilst Pontefract Collieries were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Dinnington Town in a mid-table clash.
