Baris NCEL Match Review #55
3rd March, 2013
Saturday was a day of very few surprises in the Baris Northern Counties East League with no let-up in the chase for the title in both divisions.
The Premier Division championship race now looks to be down to three teams with Scarborough Athletic, Brighouse Town and Bridlington Town all in with a shout.
Scarborough remain at the summit on an afternoon where the division's top six all won, leading the pack by two points after their 3-0 victory at Heanor Town.
All their goals came in the second period with Ryan Blott opening the account with his 34th of the season and the job was completed by James Bennett and Matthew Plummer.
Two goals from Ben Charlesworth ensured that Brighouse remain within touching distance in second place after their 3-1 home victory over Armthorpe Welfare.
A further three points behind with two games in hand on the two sides above them are Bridlington Town who thumped relegation-threatened Lincoln Moorlands Railway, 9-2, at the Neil Hudgell Law Stadium.
Scott Phillips struck a hat-tick whilst Josh Greening found the net twice to keep the Seasiders' title challenge in their own hands.
Fourth-placed Worksop Parramore were 2-1 victors at Glasshoughton Welfare, thanks to Darryl Winter's 83rd minute winner, but games may be starting to run out for them as they are eleven points away from the summit with only nine to play.
Nick Thompson's strike three minutes from time ensured Tadcaster Albion maintained their grip on fifth spot with a 1-0 home win over Maltby Main and Retford United completed the clean sweep of the top six as they came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Arnold Town.
That defeat has seen the Eagles fall back into the relegation zone, overtaken by Winterton Rangers who were the only side in the bottom half of the table to win.
Chris Funnell broke the deadlock for them at home to Staveley Miners Welfare before a Danny Claridge own goal and a strike from Robbie Start made it a 3-0 victory.
Hall Road Rangers stay in the basement after Craig Fletcher and Martyn Lee netted for Parkgate in a 2-0 win for the home side to move them up into the top ten.
Pickering Town were 2-1 winners over visitors Thackley, courtesy of an 89th minute goal from John Heads, and they climb up to seventh.
Long Eaton United drew 2-2 at home to Liversedge whilst Barton Town Old Boys picked up a point, 1-1 at Nostell Miners Welfare.
It was almost a predictable afternoon in Division One, as well, with eight of the top nine all winning.
Only Albion Sports suffered defeat and a blow to their title hopes, losing 1-0 at Eccleshill United, Marcus Edwards breaking the deadlock on 24 minutes.
Matthew Roberts popped up with two minutes remaining to maintain Athersley Recreation's five point lead at the top with a 2-1 victory at Clipstone Welfare.
Craig Heard, Liam Gray and Seb Carole all netted for second-placed Knaresborough Town in their 3-0 home win over Bottesford Town.
Shirebrook Town go above Albion Sports into third, seven points from the top, after Daniel Williams' brace helped them to a 4-0 win at struggling Yorkshire Amateur.
A Luke Mascall brace gave Cleethorpes Town a 2-1 victory at Rossington Main to keep them in the top five, ahead of Pontefract Collieries who scored all their goals in the opening 35 minutes in their 3-2 victory at Dinnington Town.
AFC Emley, Teversal and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic remain unmoved in the top nine after victories.
Aaron Joseph and Paul Sykes struck for Emley as they beat hosts Grimsby Borough, 2-1, Worsbrough were 4-0 home winners over Hemsworth Miners Welfare and two goals from Will Harcourt wrapped up a 6-0 victory for Teversal against next-to-bottom Askern Villa at Carnarvon Street.
Selby Town still prop up the rest but have closed the gap to five points after a Daniel Gray double helped them to a 3-1 win at Appleby Frodingham.
And, in the only draw in Division One, Louth Town came away from Sandygate with a point after it finished 1-1 at Hallam.
