Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2013/14 #3
19th August, 2013
Eleven Toolstation NCEL teams have made it through to the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser as the world's oldest football competition got underway again at the weekend.
The first of our sides to progress was Worksop Parramore who beat visitors AFC Blackpool, 2-0, on Friday night, courtesy of first half goals from Jordan Eagers and Sam Smith.
Nine more went through on Saturday with five of our representatives beating teams from other leagues.
A Kevin Hughes own goal and a late Alex Cusack strike saw Albion Sports through 2-0 at home to Ebac Northern League side North Shields.
Basford United were also winners on their own patch, Martin Carruthers netting the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute to beat Holwell Sports of the East Midlands Counties League.
Luke Gibson gave Brighouse Town a third minute lead at home to Seaham Red Star before the Northern League outfit levelled early in the second period but Tom Matthews restored the hosts' advantage and Ryan Hall made sure of the victory with an injury-time penalty.
First half goals from Scott Phillips and Joel Sutton proved to be enough for Bridlington Town at North West Counties League side Silsden as the Seasiders won 2-1.
And, Staveley Miners Welfare defeated Ashton Town of the North West Counties League by the same scoreline, Matthew Thorpe's early strike was cancelled out before Ryan Damms' 50th minute penalty saw the home side through.
In the four all-NCEL encounters, it was Barton Town Old Boys, Long Eaton United, Shirebrook Town and Retford United who went through.
Ryan Cooper and Ashley Dexter helped Barton Town progress, 2-1 at home to Nostell Miners Welfare, although an injury-time strike from Danny Critchlow made it a nervy end for the home side.
Shirebrook Town defeated Parkgate, 3-0, with Craig Getliff, Aaron Moxam and Gavin King getting the goals as the Division One outfit overcame their Premier Division hosts.
Two goals from Reece Thompson, sandwiching a Liam Wilkin strike, ensured a 3-1 home success for Retford United against Heanor Town whilst Long Eaton United went through, courtesy of a 4-2 victory at Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
The other teams to bow out of the competition at the first stage were Armthorpe Welfare, Garforth Town, Glasshoughton Welfare, Hall Road Rangers, Liversedge, Louth Town, Maltby Main, Pickering Town, Pontefract Collieries, Teversal, Thackley and Winterton Rangers.
AFC Emley became the eleventh side to go through as they produced a late comeback to beat visitors Wigan Robin Park, 3-2, on Sunday.
The North West Counties League side were 2-1 up going into injury time before Anthony Haigh found an equaliser and, just as it looked as though there would be a midweek replay, Emley were awarded a spot-kick which was dispatched by Paul Sykes to snatch the victory.
Tadcaster Albion will be at home to Bishop Auckland on Tuesday night as their tie is the only one that requires a replay after a goalless draw on Friday.
There were seven matches in Division One on Saturday for the sides not involved in the FA Cup this season with Shaw Lane Aquaforce making it three wins out of three to stay top of the table.
They were 4-0 winners at Grimsby Borough with first half strikes from Kane Reece, Ashley Flynn and James Young making sure the game was over by the interval before Flynn got his second and their fourth on 65 minutes.
Clipstone are up into second after drawing at Eccleshill United despite being 3-0 down after the opening quarter of the game.
The Eagles looked to be coasting to victory when Marcus Edwards broke the deadlock and Drake Trease pounced twice in a minute to put them well ahead.
But, Robert Paling's penalty and a goal from Steve Carty meant the visitors were just a goal behind by half-time and Liam Pride got the important leveller with two minutes remaining.
A Tom Hyde brace moved Rossington Main into the top six following their 2-1 win at Dinnington Town.
And, there were first victories of the new campaign for Yorkshire Amateur and Selby Town.
The Ammers beat hosts Dronfield Town, 3-0, Joel Hughes' opener added to by a double from Dempsey Smith whilst Selby won a seven-goal thriller at home to Appleby Frodingham.
Nathan Kamara got two for the Robins in a 4-3 victory after they trailed at the interval.
Knaresborough Town shared four goals with Cleethorpes Town and there was a 0-0 draw for Bottesford Town at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.
