Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #64

2nd April, 2023

Congratulations to Campion who were confirmed as the Toolstation NCEL Division One champions on a Saturday afternoon where North Ferriby were presented with the Premier Division trophy.

Ferriby celebrated their title-winning season with a 3-1 home victory over a Handsworth side who played most of the game with ten men after Thomas Cropper was red carded in the opening ten minutes.

Daniel East and Danny Emerton's quickfire double then put the Villagers in control before Samuel Smith pulled one back on 79 minutes and Danny Earl grabbed the home side's third in stoppage time.

Winterton Rangers have taken another step towards claiming second spot and an Inter-Step Play-Off for the chance of promotion.

Two goals each from Samuel Aynsley, Josh Walker and Jack Varley secured them a 6-1 home win over Albion Sports whose solitary strike came from Eivind Johnsen.

Rangers remain ten points clear of third-placed Emley AFC who, courtesy of a Sam Cook own goal and a Samuel Pashley strike, won 2-0 at Knaresborough Town to keep themselves still with a mathematical chance of taking the runners-up position.

Penistone Church and Garforth Town tightened their grip on fourth and fifth place, respectively, with victories.

Goals for Josh Brown, Leon Hurles-Brook, Brett Lovell, Thomas Charlesworth and Kieran Ryan ensured a 5-0 home win for Church over Thackley.

And, Garforth defeated visitors Bottesford Town 4-1, an early penalty from Daniel Coupland was added to by Charlie Marshall and a Matthew Antlcliff double before Joe Simpson's spot kick earned a consolation for the Poachers.

Bottesford are now one of three sides who could join basement side Yorkshire Amateur in finishing in the relegation zone.

The Ammers picked up their third win of the season thanks to an Alfie Wilkinson brace in a 2-0 victory at sixth-placed Hallam.

Goole AFC remain alongside them below the dotted line as they were beaten 4-0 by visitors Hemsworth Miners Welfare, thanks mainly to a hat-trick from Jason Davis.

Frickley Athletic are the other side not yet mathematically safe after their 1-1 draw at Eccleshill United, Richard Collier with a second-half leveller after Musab Aliya had given the hosting Eagles a 34th minute lead.

Goole and Bottesford, though, would have to win all of their remaining games to escape at Frickley's expense.

There was a 1-1 draw between Maltby Main and Silsden AFC, Lamin Jenneh Gitteh's opener for the visitors cancelled out by Toby Kenyon.

And, one Premier Division game was called off as Barton Town's home clash with Golcar United postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Campion took the Division One title in commanding fashion as they thrashed Armthorpe Welfare 8-1, a result that also ended their hosts' play-off hopes.

Daniel Illingworth and Patrick Sykes had the away side two up by the fifth minute, Jamie Austin pulled one back for Welfare but Aidan Kirkby made it 3-1 by the interval.

Stephen Crawford added a fourth just after the break and then two each from Ashley Flynn and Nicky Boshell completed the tally.

That victory, coupled with second-placed Harrogate Railway Athletic's 1-1 home draw with Parkgate, secured Campion the title with an unassailable ten point lead.

Charlie Owen had put the Rail in front against the Steelmen but Sam Thompson's 55th minute equaliser picked up what could be a huge point for his side in their battle to avoid relegation.

The fight to beat the drop is going to the wire with now just four teams in danger, Parkgate the side just outside the drop zone by a point ahead of Shirebrook Town who were seconds away from picking up a big win at home to Dronfield Town.

Nathan Murr's 78th minute strike would have moved them out of the bottom three but Regan Rooke netted an injury-time equaliser that leaves the Langwith Road side in the relegation places and their fate is no longer in their own hands.

The other two sides below the dotted line, Swallownest and Athersley Recreation, saw their survival hopes dented by defeats.

Swallownest are two points away from safety with two games to play after a 3-0 home loss to Nostell Miners Welfare, Tawheed Ahmed's double added to by Harvey Booth.

And, the Rec are seven points adrift of Parkgate with three games to play following their 4-2 home defeat at the hands of play-off chasing Horbury Town, Finley Ellis, Luke Playford, Jak Kelly and Daniel Wassell with the visitors' goals.

It is now down to just Horbury and Retford FC as to who will claim the final play-off spot, as Retford ended Brigg Town's hopes by beating them 1-0 at the Rail Ground, Alex Boyd with the 67th minute decider.

Two of the sides who have secured a play-off berth met each other in a 3-3 draw as Reiss Harrison netted an injury-time equaliser for visitors Rossington Main in a highly entertaining match at Wakefield AFC.

Staveley Miners Welfare, who are unable to take part in the play-offs, have confirmed fifth spot with a 9-0 thrashing of visitors Ollerton Town.

William Wraith's hat-trick was added to by one each for Archie White, Clark Greaves, Jack Deakin, Jack Dolman, Timothy Whittaker and Sam Hooper.

Elsewhere, there were goals in the last quarter-of-an-hour from Reece Moody, Mathew Stafford and Luke Soluburic as Beverley Town won 3-1 at Selby Town.

And, there was a 1-1 draw between Glasshoughton Welfare and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic who both secured their safety with a point apiece.
