Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #56

11th February, 2024

Emley AFC's excellent season has continued as they booked their place in the Quarter-Finals of this season's Isuzu FA Vase with a 2-0 home win over Whickham on Saturday.

The Toolstation NCEL Premier Division leaders are through to the last eight for the first time since 1988 thanks to second half goals from Charlie Barks and James Walshaw in what was a combative tie against their Ebac Northern League visitors.

Hallam are looking to join the Pewits in the next stage but their tie at home to former NCEL side Lincoln United was one of a number of the weekend's games that were called off following snow and heavy rain over the previous couple of days.

Four matches survived in the Premier Division with third-placed Thackley unable to close the gap on the top two after they went down to a 2-1 home loss against Handsworth.

Leon Howarth gave the visiting Ambers an early lead that was doubled towards the start of the second period by Aaron Moxam before Thomas Greaves grabbed what proved to be a consolation for the Dennyboys with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

The two other sides in the top five met at the Horsfall Community Stadium with a 1-1 draw leaving hosts Albion Sports and their opponents Rossington Main fifth and fourth, respectively.

Robbie Fox had seemingly given Sports the points when he opened the scoring on 82 minutes but Liam King equalised in stoppage time to ensure the spoils were shared.

Maltby Main remain four points adrift in the basement as they were beaten 1-0 by visitors Silsden AFC who climb to ninth, Nash Connolly with the decider on 37 minutes.

And, Bottesford Town were single-goal winners at Knaresborough Town, Joshua Fraiwald netting in the first half to move the Poachers eleven points clear of Maltby as they continue their climb away from danger.

In the six games that went ahead in Division One, Beverley Town were 7-0 home winners over Athersley Recreation to become its new leader.

There were two goals each for Matthew Plumber and Benjamin Hinchliffe whilst Joe McFadyen, Alexander Knaggs and Matthew Stafford also got their names on the scoresheet.

Beverley leapfrog Wakefield AFC who drew 2-2 at Brigg Town, Ben Gelder putting the away side ahead on eleven minutes but they trailed at half-time courtesy of goals from Luke Mascall and Dean McCarthy for the Zebras.

Slater Barkham-Barnes' leveller on 69 minutes earned the visitors a point but it was not enough to keep them at the summit.

Shirebrook Town stay fourth after a 2-2 draw at Louth Town, James Simmonite rescuing a point with an injury-time equaliser after Bradley McGowan's opener for them had been cancelled out by Bradley Coulam and then Kieran Perry had put the hosts in front.

Retford United have moved to within three points of the play-off zone in sixth as they won 8-1 at home to bottom side Ollerton Town in a game where all nine goals came in a breathtaking first half.

Liam Owen and Alister Haydock both scored twice with Adam Chapman, Maximilian Dungworth, Owen Fieldsend and Joshua Nodder also netting for the home side.

Toby Francis scored for Ollerton who stay twenty points away from safety but one of the other sides in the relegation zone, Yorkshire Amateur, picked up a victory as they beat visitors Clay Cross Town 3-1.

Marcel Chigumira's opener for the Ammers was cancelled out by Gracjan Klimczak but Ralph Bertrand Nkomba restored their advantage by half-time and Birama Diallo made sure of the victory that sees them now four points away from Armthorpe Welfare in their bid for survival.

And, Max Rhodes' hat-trick helped Dronfield Town to a 7-2 home win over Glasshoughton Welfare, Kenan McKenzie-Gray scored twice and there was one apiece for Connor Chapell and James Lindores.

Ethan Weaver had put Welfare ahead in the opening minute whilst Joe Stamp scored their second with eighteen minutes remaining.
