Oldies Get Their Own World Cup

4th July, 2006

The world's greatest football competition will soon be followed by one that blows it out of the water when it comes to history, reports The Non-League Paper.

For Sheffield FC, the world's oldest club, are to host their version of the World Cup, featuring more of the oldest names in the game.

For their International Football Heritage Tournament, being held to commemorate Sheffield's 150th year, will also feature Welsh Premier League NEWI Cefn Druids - the oldest club in Wales - and Corinthian Casuals, another true dinosaur of the English game who date back to 1882.

The new boys for the novel tournament will be the Isle of Man squad, who will be representing England in the UEFA Regions Cup in the autumn.

Sheffield FC boss Dave McCarthy said: "All the clubs approached have readily accepted the offer to be involved, with the famous Corinthian Casuals stepping in only this week to replace Northern Ireland side Cliftonville who had to withdraw from the tournament."

The tournament takes place over the weekend of July 22nd to 23rd.

The ambitious NCEL club's intriguing pre-season programme also includes a clash between 'the oldest' and 'the newest' as they host the recently-formed FC United.

The friendly on July the 29th has been switched to the Don Valley Stadium to accommodate an expected four-figure following from Manchester.
