Rebuilding Starts At Hall Corner

10th July, 2006

With less than a month to the start of the 2006/07 campaign, Glapwell's new manager Les McJannet faces the daunting task of building a side almost from scratch.

All but one of last season's players walked out on the club during the close season.

Only Richard Smith has so far remained loyal to Glapwell, whilst defender Damien Magee has gone to Alfreton and midfielder Adam Walker to Ilkeston.

The majority of the rest have followed previous Glapwell manager Lee Wilson to McJannet's former club, NCEL Premier Division rivals Sutton Town.

The remaining players have either stepped down to Central Midlands football, not found a club yet or have quit Saturday football altogether.

And McJannet suffered a further setback this week when Jason Pascoe - who came with him from Sutton Town as his number two, along with Kip Garton as club physio - announced that he would not be able to fulfil his managerial duties at Glapwell due to work pressures, and was quitting as assistant manager.

However, the blow was softened a little when the experienced defender committed his name to the growing list of Glapwell players for the coming season.

Better news followed though, and McJannet and the club were boosted by the arrival at Hall Corner soon afterwards of Kevin Gee as assistant manager.

It revives a previously successful working relationship between the pair that only ended when Gee moved on from Sutton to become involved with youth development at Notts County some four years ago.

Recent changes at the Magpies, however, have forced Gee to look elsewhere for involvement in football and he was delighted to be working with his old pal once again.

Glapwell Football Club have not been idle off the field either this summer.

As well as the usual routine maintenance at Hall Corner to the playing surface and its surrounds; car parking and spectator access has been improved, and a smart new entrance for players and officials has been provided.

Work is also well underway to fully enclose the ground with the building of a wall on the southern boundary, and substantial new players' dugouts have been built.

All of this, including significant improvements to the clubhouse and office areas, and boosted with the addition of experienced ex-Sutton Town secretary Roger Keeling onto Glapwell's hard-working committee, will stand the club in good stead for eventual promotion to the UniBond League.
