Sheffield Gets The Boot 2,000 Times!

12th July, 2006

More than a thousand pairs of football boots have been donated to Sheffield FC's Boots for Africa campaign, just two months since it was launched.

The total edges the world's oldest football club to their minimum target of 2007 pairs of boots, which are to be donated to young people in the townships of South Africa.

More than 27 schools and colleges, eight local sporting organisations and 28 businesses from across Yorkshire have given their support to the campaign by having black bin collection points and donating sacks filled with boots.

Former England and Arsenal defender Tony Adams kicked-off Boots for Africa at the start of May and Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Tims admits the response has been phenomenal.

"We have been amazed with the generosity of people from across the region," he said. "It is great to see so many businesses, sport clubs and education providers get behind the campaign in such a short space of time.

"Hopefully, the boots will continue to flood in and allow us to make a real difference to people in South Africa."

Meanwhile, Sheffield FC are also playing host to a unique children's soccer fundraising event.

The club is joining forces with shirt sponsors A4E Ltd to host SoccerJam on Wednesday July the 19th at their Bright Finance Stadium, Dronfield.

More than 120 local school children are expected to attend the event which organisers hope will raise more than ?2,500 for the NSPCC.

SoccerJam is open to both boys and girls aged 10-11 and combines soccer exercises with dance routines to create a unique style of aerobics.

The exercises are being choreographed by professional dancers, including an ex-professional and indeed Sheffield FC footballer who took up dancing and keep fit after his football career ended.
