Jones is New Selby Boss

31st May, 2012

Selby Town are pleased to announce their new management team to take the club forward after the departure of Graham Hodder at the end of last season.

The Robins were inundated with good applications and, after numerous interviews, the club felt that Phil Jones was the man best qualified to take the club forward, assisted by local coach Nigel Emery.

Jones was a former Grimsby Town trainee who had trials at Lincoln City and Bradford City, and competed for two years in League of Ireland.

Jones has got FA coaching badges up to level 2 and started last season assisting Leon Sewell at Selby Town before leaving to manage Boston Town Reserves.

There, he was promoted to first team manager later on in the season but decided to leave that role to take on the post of the Selby Town manager.

A club spokesperson said: "Jones knows the job is going to be a hard one, but is up for the challenge ahead, and is confident in his abilities to put together a good management team, a squad of players that will be ready for the challenge and more importantly play football the right way.

"From the start, the players will be made aware of the history of Selby Town and the pride that goes with pulling on the red shirt.

"Jones can promise the fans there won't be any team fitter than Selby, or have a bigger desire to win a game.

"Fitness and conditioning coaches will be appointed, along with a dietician to give the players the best chance of avoiding injuries, as well as being able to look after their bodies during the week.

"The season ahead is going to be a long and hard one, but Jones promises he will put a smile back on their faces of the fans and give them a team to be proud of."

Nigel Emery comes straight from managing local side Thorpe United and had a successful season winning the County Cup in his first season at the helm.

Emery spent 3 months at Burnley in 1988 but declined a contract as Sheffield Wednesday were showing interest in the player.

He played for Selby Town from 1989 to 1993 before moving onto Sherburn White Rose.

In 2004, Emery started playing for Harrogate Veterans and, four years later, started playing for England Veterans and was part of the England Veterans World Cup winning team in 2009.

The coming season promises to be a new start at the club and the committee would like to welcome the new additions.

They are also pleased to invite all players, old and new, and supporters to meet the new manager at Selby Town's Rigid Stadium Friday 1st June from 7.30pm.
