Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2014/15 #65
5th April, 2015
Worksop Town and Pontefract Collieries are in pole position with four weeks to go in the race to become Premier Division and Division One champions, respectively, after a long Easter weekend of matches.
The Toolstation NCEL fixture list was spread out over three days for the third East(er) Ground Hop with all eight of the games involved in that event enjoying bumper crowds.
It began on Thursday night as Nostell Miners Welfare made themselves virtually safe of the Premier Division's bottom two with a 2-0 home win over Retford United who are now almost certainly set to finish below the dotted line, Rob Bordman getting both of the goals.
The three matches on Good Friday began with a 3-0 win in the Premier Division for Cleethorpes Town at Barton Town Old Boys, Brody Robertson's brace sandwiching a Louis Grant strike moving them up into second spot, three points away from the top.
Then, Winterton Rangers and Yorkshire Amateur played out a 1-1 draw as Division One took centre stage before Grimsby Borough won 3-1 at home to Hall Road Rangers, only their second league victory of the season, with Peter Fuller getting two of their goals.
Saturday began bright and early with a 10:30am start for Division One title chasers AFC Emley but they were beaten at home by Hemsworth Miners Welfare who boosted their own promotion hopes with a 3-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Nash Connolly, Dominic Blair and Nicholas Guest.
Attention then turned to the Premier Division where Parkgate went ahead through Adam Stapleford-Jones but went down 2-1 at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
The eleven games not involved the groundhop event all kicked-off at the usual time of 3pm with Premier Division leaders Worksop Town winning 4-2 at Thackley to move six points clear of Cleethorpes, Conor Higginson getting two for the Tigers in a game that was goalless at half-time.
Daniel Gray's late winner earned fourth-placed Tadcaster Albion a 2-1 victory at Garforth Town whilst Bridlington Town moved up into fifth with a 3-1 home victory over Armthorpe Welfare.
Elsewhere in the top flight, Handsworth Parramore were comfortable 4-0 winners at home to Albion Sports, Liversedge won 1-0 at Maltby Main and it was a 1-1 draw for Athersley Recreation at Pickering Town.
In Division One, Clipstone made sure they moved to within two points of the top two with two games in hand as they won 3-0 at home to Rossington Main, Matty Ord and Jamie Smith putting them two up by the interval before a third was added midway through the second period by Richard Mintoft.
And, there were wins for Louth Town, AFC Mansfield and Bottesford Town to stay sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Arron Scutt and Luke Rainer-Mistry struck in a minute in Louth's 3-2 home triumph over Hallam, a Craig Mitchell brace helped Mansfield to a 4-0 stroll at struggling Lincoln Moorlands Railway and Terry Barwick converted a couple of penalties as Bottesford won 2-1 at home to Eccleshill United.
Knaresborough Town remain fourteenth despite a 4-0 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
The groundhop resumed at 4:45pm with Shaw Lane Aquaforce clinching a vital 1-0 home win over Heanor Town, courtesy of a 38th minute goal from Sam Denton, to move them back up into second spot in the Premier Division, five points behind Worksop.
And, the weekend was concluded with a thumping 7-0 win for Pontefract Collieries at Penistone Church that means they are now three points clear at the top of Division One, Aaron Moxam with two of the goals for the visitors.
It means that going into the final straight, the promotion and title races in both the Premier Division and Division One are still too close to call.
At the other end of the tables, Premier Division basement side Glasshoughton Welfare now need to win all of their remaining six games to have any chance of moving out of the relegation zone whilst Retford are twelve points away from safety with five matches to play.
In Division One, Grimsby Borough stay well adrift despite their excellent win on Friday, needing at least sixteen points from their last seven games to climb out of the bottom two whilst the team just above them, Lincoln Moorlands Railway, are five points behind twentieth-placed Teversal but with only three games left to play.
