Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2018/19 #19

11th October, 2018

The leaders of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and Division One came from behind to take a point from their home matches in midweek.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare's comeback was the most spectacular as they came from 3-0 down at the interval to draw 3-3 with Bottesford Town and extend their advantage at the top of the Premier Division to two points.

Henry Cook, Jack McMenemy and Wayne Graves had given the visiting Poachers an excellent chance of winning the game but Sidney Santos sparked the revival in the opening period of the second half, Joe Edwards' own goal closed the gap even further and Nash Connolly made sure the spoils were shared with sixteen minutes remaining.

In Division One, top side Winterton Rangers fell behind to a Mitch Husbands opener for Hallam in first half stoppage time.

But, William Peers converted a 74th minute penalty to claim, like Hemsworth, their first draw of the season and they are now four points clear of second-placed Nostell Miners Welfare.

Shirebrook Town raced into a 3-0 lead at Armthorpe Welfare, Samuel Dockwray, Declan Brewin and Carter Widdowson with the goals and, although Jordan Buckham opened the scoring for the hosts, there was not a Hemsworth-style fightback for Welfare.

Brewin got his second from the penalty spot and Thomas Widdowson made it 5-1 before Armthorpe grabbed their second from Darren Mansaram in stoppage time.

The rest of the midweek action focused on County Cup fixtures with Worksop Town proving to be the giantkillers in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.

They won 3-1 at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Sheffield, Tomas Poole, Max Pemberton and Liam Royles sending them through after their hosts had taken a fourteenth minute lead.

Three sides avoided upsets as Jack Briscoe's hat-trick saw Athersley Recreation through 3-2 at home to a battling South Kirkby Colliery whilst Penistone Church edged a 1-0 victory with AFC Bentley, Kieran Ryan with the vital goal on 36 minutes.

And, Rossington Main ran riot against Denaby United with three goals each for Lee Holmes and Declan Howe as their side thrashed their former NCEL opponents 11-2.

But, Nostell Miners Welfare were beaten 4-3 after extra-time by Dodworth Miners Welfare to bow out of the competition at the Second Round stage, despite goals from Joe Wood, Daniel Critchlow and Jack Owen.

Meanwhile, in the only all-NCEL tie, Zak Khalifa struck twice as Parkgate won 3-1 at home to fellow Division One side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

Goole AFC and Yorkshire Amateur defeated Premier Division rivals to progress to the Second Round of the West Riding County Cup with the Ammers having the easier time, Adam Shaw's hat-trick helping them to a 5-0 win at Harrogate Railway Athletic.

Goole needed penalties after they shared six goals at home with Albion Sports, the Vikings going through 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out.

Roy Fogarty struck twice as Premier Division hosts Liversedge edged out Division One visitors Campion 3-2 whilst the other four NCEL sides in action were all knocked out.

Garforth Town, Glasshoughton Welfare and Eccleshill United were all beaten at higher-ranked opposition whilst Thackley bowed out on penalties at Hallmark Security League side Steeton.
