Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2018/19 #37

6th January, 2019

A 2-0 defeat at neighbours Garforth Town has seen Yorkshire Amateur's lead at the top of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division cut to four points after Saturday's goal-filled afternoon of action.

The home side took the lead early in the second period through Sean Hunter and sealed the victory with three minutes remaining thanks to Daniel Williams' strike, meaning Garforth move up a place to thirteenth in the table.

The other two top-three sides met at the DSM Memorial Ground with hosts Penistone Church securing a 3-1 win against Knaresborough Town to tighten their grip on second spot and close the gap on the summit.

The match was level at 1-1 at the interval, Brett Lovell's early opener for Penistone cancelled out by Daniel Thirkell, before a Nathan Keightley brace claimed the victory in the final quarter of the game.

Knaresborough drop to fourth, overtaken by Hemsworth Miners Welfare who thrashed hosts Athersley Recreation 8-0, the visitors taking a four-goal lead by the break thanks to Nash Connolly, Harry Steeple, Seon Ripley and Harry Viggars.

Connolly then completed his hat-trick in the second half, Steeple grabbed his second and Bradley Dockerty also got on the scoresheet.

Bridlington Town and Maltby Main kept themselves in fifth and sixth, respectively, but have moved closer to the leaders with wins.

Nathan Modest's first half double was added to in the 49th minute by Matthew Broadley as Bridlington won 3-0 at home to bottom side Goole AFC and are now just eight points behind the Ammers with four games in hand.

Maltby, meanwhile, went behind to an 84th minute own goal from James Pollard at Handsworth Parramore but Steven Hopewell quickly restored parity and Jordan Turner snatched an injury-time winner in a 2-1 victory to take back to Muglet Lane.

The best individual goalscoring display, meanwhile, came at Staveley Miners Welfare who dispatched visitors Hall Road Rangers 8-0 with Joe Pugh scoring six - two from the penalty spot - whilst Matthew Davies and Jahmal Riley piled further pressure on the away side who are now two points above the relegation zone.

Harrogate Railway Athletic dragged themselves closer to Rangers with a 1-1 draw at Eccleshill United, Stephen Smith giving them a 26th minute lead that was cancelled out by an Andrew Cooper penalty on 50.

Bottesford Town were dramatic 2-1 winners at home to Thackley whilst there were 0-0 draws as Barton Town hosted Worksop Town and Albion Sports travelled to Liversedge.

Division One table-toppers Campion were also held to a goalless draw by visitors Ollerton Town so they stay at the helm but are now just a point ahead of second-placed Winterton Rangers who won 4-3 at Armthorpe Welfare.

Rangers were cruising to all three points as goals from Paul Grimes, Adam Lee, Luke Anderson and a Tyla Bell penalty had given them a 4-0 lead by the 83rd minute before Armthorpe almost staged a remarkable comeback.

Thomas Finley got the first for Welfare, Liam Radford then converted a penalty and, when Luke Williams scored their third in stoppage time, an improbable draw looked likely but the away side held out and will have collectively let out a massive sigh of relief when the final whistle was blown.

Grimsby Borough stay third despite a 3-2 loss at Glasshoughton Welfare, but are now ahead of Hallam and Nostell Miners Welfare on goal difference only.

Borough led 2-0 after 52 minutes thanks to goals from Adam Drury and Peter Winn but Glasshoughton fought back level with Adam Walsh and Nathan Perks netting in the last quarter-of-an-hour before Perks' second claimed a fantastic turnaround victory for the hosts.

Hallam and Nostell moved to 42 points alongside Borough with victories, a Kieran Watson double helping Hallam to a 3-1 home win over AFC Emley and the Sandygate side, who welcomed the biggest Division One crowd of the season with 367 at the game, have matches in hand on all of the sides around them in the title chase.

Meanwhile, Nostell left it until the eighth minute of injury time to grab a 1-0 win at Rossington Main, Jack Owen with the vital strike.

Selby Town are up into sixth after their 7-0 home defeat of Shirebrook Town, Fraser Hansen with a double whilst Louis Hutton, Garry Collier, Liam Flanagan and Christopher Bilton also got on the scoresheet, and a Carter Widdowson own goal added to the Robins' tally.

They go above Worsbrough Bridge Athletic who twice led at home to next-to-bottom Harworth Colliery, the visitors levelling through Ainsley Finney and Matthew Robinson in a 2-2 draw.

That was also the scoreline for basement side FC Bolsover who led 2-0 at home to Swallownest by half-time through Daniel Palmer and Jake Morrison, but an Oliver Grady penalty and an 82nd minute equaliser from Joshua Statham made it a point apiece.

There were 3-0 wins for eighth-placed Parkgate and ninth-placed Dronfield Town, the former notching up their eighth straight victory as a Bruno Holden brace helped them to beat hosts East Yorkshire Carnegie.

And, there were also two goals for Christian Savage as Dronfield defeated visitors Skegness Town.
