NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #17

4th October, 2009

Eight KoolSport NCEL clubs remain in the FA Vase after this weekend's First Round action.

Two of them beat rivals from our league with Armthorpe Welfare winning at home to Liversedge and Long Eaton United knocking out hosts Arnold Town.

Armthorpe progressed with goals from Liam Hardy, Stuart Preston and Liam Nelthorpe in their 3-1 victory over Sedge.

Jermaine Moyce grabbed a consolation in the last fifteen minutes for the away side.

Kevin Mabon scored the only goal of the afternoon at Eagle Valley for Long Eaton.

Lincoln Moorlands Railways clinched their Second Round spot with a 2-1 win at United Counties outfit Blackstones, Jack McGovern with the winner on 73 minutes.

Danny Buttle and Craig Palmer scored either side of half-time to earn Bridlington Town a 2-0 home victory over North Shields.

Hallam were comfortable 4-0 winners at Colne with Simon Asquith grabbing a hat-trick whilst Andrew Wood also got on the scoresheet.

Pickering Town were three-up by the half-hour at North Shields with Gary Hepples, Chaz Wrigley and Darren Clough giving them a perfect start.
The Pikes conceded twice in the last ten minutes to make things edgy but they managed to hold on and go through.

And, James Whitehead's 81st minute winner put Rainworth Miners Welfare's name in the hat after their 2-1 victory at home to Deeping Rangers.

Those seven winners join Scarborough Athletic, who enter the competition at the Second Round stage, in the draw that takes place tomorrow.

Three ties went to extra time with all of them ultimately going against our sides.

Tadcaster Albion were the unluckiest as a penalty in the 118th minute knocked them out at Whickham.

Winterton Rangers lost 2-0 at Dunkirk whilst Rossington Main were beaten 3-0 at home to Alsager Town.

The other sides to bow out of the competition on Saturday were Bottesford Town, Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Grimsby Borough, Selby Town, Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Dinnington Town and Hall Road Rangers.

Rangers lost 5-1 at West Auckland Town but were left rueing a missed penalty when they were 2-1 down that could have meant a completely different afternoon for them.

Leeds Carnegie missed out on being the sole Division One side in the Second Round as they were beaten 3-2 at home by Shildon on Sunday.

In the three matches that were played in the Premier Division on Saturday, Scarborough Athletic stretched their lead at the top of the table to five points with a victory at Brodsworth Welfare.

Many expected it to be an avalanche of goals with Broddy propping up the table with a goal difference of -48 going into the game.

But, they produced a steely performance to keep the defeat to just a single goal, Graham Botham with the decisive strike early in the second half.

Welfare are still joined on no points by next-to-bottom Shirebrook Town who were beaten 1-0 at Maltby Main, Greg Mason with the goal on 23 minutes.

Main move up to sixth, just behind Thackley who climb to fifth after their 3-0 win at Nostell Miners Welfare.

A double from Luke Hudson, one an injury-time penalty, surrounding a Matthew Mathers strike saw them claim their fifth league win of the season.

In Division One, Appleby Frodingham move up to third and are just one point behind leaders Askern Villa after their 2-1 win at Brighouse Town.

They went behind to a Danny Toronczak goal on 17 minutes but Matthew Robinson levelled soon after the interval and Darren Fogg claimed the winner with seven minutes remaining.

They go above AFC Emley who drew 1-1 at Eccleshill United, with the hosts picking up their first point - Oliver Gage put Emley ahead early on but Andy Howland quickly restored parity for the Eagles.

Next-to-bottom Glasshoughton Welfare were beaten 1-0 at home by Barton Town Old Boys whilst Pontefract Collieries and Staveley Miners Welfare picked up a point each with a 1-1 draw.
