NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #21
18th October, 2009
Scarborough Athletic's lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division has returned to five points after their 2-0 victory at home to Pickering Town.
Before the game, there was an impeccable minute's silence for Pikes chairman, Tony Dunning, who passed away the previous weekend - the fact that 626 people observed it without a sound showed the respect and admiration that he commanded in local football.
Once the whistle blew for kick off, however, Scarborough were not in charitable mood as Ryan Blott, on his return to the club, scored the opener on seven minutes.
Then, another who had spent some time away from the team this season, Scott Phillips, added the second from the penalty spot with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.
Losing ground on Scarborough were second placed Bridlington Town who were beaten 3-1 at Rainworth Miners Welfare.
Brid's cause was not helped by the sending off of their keeper during the first half in a match packed with incident that included Wrens boss Rudy Funk also dispatched to the stands by the referee.
Danny Naylor had put the home side ahead early on before a Frank Belt penalty quickly restored parity.
Ant Lynam, however, made it 2-1 with just eleven minutes gone and then Massiah McDonald added Rainworth's third just before half-time.
The second half was a much more quiet affair and the Wrens picked up the points that kept them in fifth place.
Armthorpe Welfare remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier Division after their 4-1 win at Hallam to catch up with Bridlington Town on points.
Adam Stead got their first on 44 minutes before Liam Hardy and Henry Sibenge gave them a three-goal advantage just after the hour mark.
Simon Asquith pulled one back for the home side who remain in the bottom three after this defeat.
But, it was Armthorpe and Sibenge who completed the scoring three minutes from time.
Fourth-placed Selby Town were beaten 2-1 at Winterton Rangers with the damage done in the opening twenty minutes with goals from Danny Frost and Gavin Cooper for the home side.
Ben Spilman got Selby back into the game early in the second period but they could not find an equaliser.
Winterton climb to seventh as a result of their win.
Two points ahead of them in sixth are Thackley who, thanks to a Scott Birdsall own goal on 61 minutes, won 2-1 at Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
Brodsworth Welfare remain rooted to the foot of the table without a point after a 4-0 defeat at home to Liversedge.
Jermaine Moyce put the visitors in the lead on seven minutes before a Paul Walker hat-trick sealed the deal.
Long Eaton United picked up an excellent 2-0 home win over Parkgate to climb into eighth place, Kelvin Mushambi and Kevin Mabon with the goals in the second period.
The other two games in the top flight ended in draws with Nostell Miners Welfare sharing a goalless game at home to Arnold Town.
And, Dinnington Town, who went into the lead in the third minute through Michael Blythen, got a point at Hall Road Rangers as Jamie Barnwell scored the host's equaliser after the interval.
Askern Villa continue to be the top team in Division One but only four points separates the leading seven sides in what is shaping up to be an exciting season.
Villa were 3-1 winners at Glasshoughton Welfare thanks to a James Naylor brace and a third from Daniel Ferguson.
Matthew Cressey got a consolation for the home side who drop to sixteenth following their defeat.
Staying a point behind them in second place are Tadcaster Albion who were comfortable 4-0 winners at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.
Chris Storey had them ahead at the break before Mike Braithwaite and then a Darren Brandon doubled made sure of the victory in the second half.
Appleby Frodingham tumbled four places from third to seventh after their 2-2 draw at home to Grimsby Borough.
But, they may see it as a point saved as they had to come from behind twice, on both occasions to a Michael King goal.
Going above them in the table were a quartet of sides who all won.
Staveley Miners Welfare's excellent form continued with a 2-1 win at Teversal to move them up into third, a Joel Birks brace earning them the victory.
Leeds Carnegie move up to fourth with an 8-0 thrashing of visitors Eccleshill United who drop back to the bottom of Division One as a result.
Chibuzor Chilaka claimed a hat-trick whilst there were also goals for Tom Leaver, Kyle Hawthorne, Matt Chilton, Alex Smith and Andy Cooper.
Despite their 4-2 win at Rossington Main, AFC Emley remain in fifth place.
Lee Hill and Craig Wilkinson got two goals each for them whilst Michael MacDonald and a William McGhie penalty had kept the home side in the contest until the last ten minutes.
And, a Danny Toronczak hat-trick helped Brighouse Town to a 4-1 win at home to Yorkshire Amateur as they climb to sixth.
There were also big home victories in the remaining two Division One encounters.
Bottesford Town move up to eighth after their 4-1 win over Pontefract Collieries whilst Hemsworth Miners Welfare climbed off the bottom of the table with a fine 5-2 victory against Barton Town Old Boys.
Finally, Shirebrook Town progressed to the Second Round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup but required extra-time to beat their hosts, Gamesley, 5-3, with two goals from Andy Crossland.
