NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #23

25th October, 2009

Scarborough Athletic's defeat at Selby Town yesterday means the gap at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division has closed back to two points.

The Seadogs had taken a second minute lead at the Selby Times Stadium through Scott Phillips but found themselves pegged back almost immediately by a goal from Steve Lyon.

Luke Ibbetson put the home side ahead on 20 before Duncan Bray doubled their advantage on the hour mark.

Despite an Ian Beckram own goal getting the visitors back in the game, Scarborough could not find a third to get a point - Selby stay fourth in the table, five points behind their opponents.

Second placed Bridlington Town made easy work of Lincoln Moorlands Railway at Queensgate with a 7-0 victory.

They were four up by the interval with Jack Wilkinson scoring twice whilst Ashley Allanson and Craig Burdick also got on the scoresheet.

A Dave Stokes own goal, then strikes from Nathan Hotte and Craig Palmer completed the rout after the break.

Armthorpe Welfare stay third despite a 4-3 defeat at home to Hall Road Rangers who climb to ninth after their victory.

They were leading 3-1 after 48 minutes before James McGarry and Paul Palmer brought Rangers back level just four minutes later.

And, the winner came when Jamie Barnwell grabbed his second and the visitors' fourth five minutes from time.

Rainworth Miners Welfare remain fifth but they have now closed the gap on the sides immediately above them after a winner three minutes into injury time from Cameron Fearon in their 2-1 win at Arnold Town.

And, a Luke Hudson first-half brace, one from the penalty spot, saw sixth-placed Thackley win 2-0 at home to Winterton Rangers.

Liversedge had a comfortable afternoon as a 4-0 home victory over Maltby Main moved them up into seventh.

Paul Walker and Jermaine Moyce had scored to give them a half-time advantage before Walker netted again and Jamie Wasley also got on the scoresheet after the interval.

Sedge go above Long Eaton United who won a remarkable match at Pickering Town.

Jared Holmes and Joe Pheasant had given the visitors the perfect start after 21 minutes before Gary Hepples pulled one back before the half-hour.

Craig Mitchell struck twice to give Long Eaton a healthy 4-1 lead by half-time.

But, Pickering showed fight and got to within a goal of their opponents by the 53rd minute thanks to Lyle Hillier and Christian Fox.

The game stayed in the balance until the 77th minute when Kevin Mabon got Long Eaton's fifth.

The Pikes refused to lie down and Wayne Aziz got their fourth on 87 but the visitors made sure of the win as Mitchell completed his hat-trick in injury time for a 6-4 victory.

Brodsworth Welfare remain bottom of the pile without a point in their first dozen games as they lost 2-0 at Dinnington Town, Simon Mirfin and Robert Ward with the hosts' goals.

Shirebrook Town go above Lincoln Moorlands and out of the bottom two after a 3-1 home win over Nostell Miners Welfare, Andy Crossland with a double for them whilst Daniel O'Donnell got their third late on.

They are now just behind Hallam on goal difference after the Sheffield side drew 2-2 at Parkgate.

In Division One, Askern Villa have fallen from the top of the table after their 2-1 defeat at home to Brighouse Town.

They are now third behind Tadcaster Albion and Leeds Carnegie who took advantage of their slip-up with victories away from home.

Tadcaster are top after a 4-1 win at in-form Staveley Miners Welfare - Darren Brandon got two for them whilst Mike Braithwaite and Alan Jackson ensured the victory.

Matt Chilton's strike twenty minutes from time earned Leeds Carnegie all three points with a 3-2 win at Appleby Frodingham.

Brighouse are fourth after their victory, three points behind Tadcaster whilst AFC Emley lost a little ground in fifth after a 1-1 draw at home to Bottesford Town.

They had taken the lead on 48 minutes through Craig Marsh but were almost immediately pegged back by a Paul Chatterton penalty for the visitors.

1-1 proved to be a popular scoreline with three other games in Division One finishing that way.

Bottom side Eccleshill United drew at home to Rossington Main whilst Yorkshire Amateur and Grimsby Borough shared the goals at Bracken Edge.

And, Michael Long's strike as the game went into injury time earned Pontefract Collieries a point against visitors Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Glasshoughton Welfare's ever-improving form continued with a 2-1 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Rob Malone with their winner on 77 minutes.

And, Barton Town Old Boys left it later to beat visitors Teversal by the same scoreline, Gareth Barlow struck the vital goal with five minutes to go.
