NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #25

1st November, 2009

The top four sides in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division all won on Saturday to move further away from the chasing pack.

Scarborough Athletic's 3-2 win at home to Thackley means they stay in pole position with Ryan Blott grabbing a brace whilst Scott Phillips also got on the scoresheet in the second period for them.

But, Thackley were tough opponents and kept themselves in the game with goals from Nicky Matthews and Dean Walters.

Three sides remain two points behind the Seadogs with games in hand.

Leading them is Bridlington Town who, courtesy of a Frank Belt free kick and a Craig Burdick strike, won 2-0 at Winterton Rangers.

Next are Armthorpe Welfare who boosted their goal difference by an 8-1 bludgeoning of visitors, Dinnington Town.

Craig Morley and James Walker had them two up after 41 minutes but Simon Mirfin brought the away side back into it before the break.

But, the match belonged solely to Armthorpe in the second period as Craig Morley completed his double, there were two each for Liam Davis and Stuart Preston, and Henry Sibenge also found the net.

Fourth are Rainworth Miners Welfare who edged a closely fought local derby with ever-improving Shirebrook Town.

James Whitehead got the only goal of the game with twelve minutes remaining.

Fifth-placed Selby Town lost ground on the leading pack as they drew 1-1 at Long Eaton United.

Ian Beckram had given them a half-time lead but it only lasted to two minutes after the interval when Nick Ghislanzoni levelled for the home side.

And, with Thackley twelve points behind leaders Scarborough in sixth, it is looking increasingly likely that this year's champions will come from the current top five.

At the other end of the table, it became an unlucky thirteen without a point for Brodsworth Welfare who went down 3-1 at Maltby Main.

Chris Dickman, Greg Mason and then a Lee Mellon penalty gave Main a healthy 3-0 half-time lead.

Brodsworth got a consolation with virtually the last kick of the game from Paul Haigh.

They are seven points behind Lincoln Moorlands Railway who lost 1-0 at home to Arnold Town and Hallam who were beaten 3-1 by visitors, Pickering Town.

Highest scoring game of the day came at Dene Park where Hall Road Rangers won 8-3 at home to Parkgate.

Adam Walker nabbed a hat-trick for the hosts whilst Paul Palmer got a double and James McGarry, Anthony Bowsley and Jamie Barnwell all found the net for Rangers.

Parkgate's goals were a Lee McMahon penalty, a David Kippax strike and an own goal from Mike Lindley.

Nostell Miners Welfare drew 1-1 at home to Liversedge.

Only four points separate the top seven sides in what is proving to be an increasingly unpredictable Division One.

Both of the top sides at the start of play, Tadcaster Albion and Staveley Miners Welfare, dropped points but remain where they were as no-one else took advantage.

Tadcaster stay as leaders after a 2-2 home draw with Barton Town Old Boys, Chris Storey and Graeme Whitehead with the goals sandwiched around a Ryan Morton brace for the visitors.

All four goals were scored in the first half.

Staveley drew 1-1 at Glasshoughton Welfare, Jamie Smith's 44th-minute goal levelling for them after James Flower had given the home side the lead just before the half-hour.

Brighouse Town and Askern Villa both failed to capitalise allowing AFC Emley to catapult themselves ahead of them, and Leeds Carnegie who did not play, into third place.

Josh Wright and Lee Hill struck in the last twenty minutes to give Emley a 2-0 win at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Brighouse drew 1-1 at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Dean Shirt grabbing a point for the away side with twelve minutes remaining.

And, Villa lost 1-0 at Grimsby Borough, Lee Stephenson with the goal ten minutes from time.

Four goals from Paul Chatterton helped Bottesford Town to a 7-2 win at home to bottom side, Eccleshill United.

Craig Mitchell, Phil Jackman and Craig Bridge got the goals that move them to within four points of the leaders but they stay in seventh place.

Yorkshire Amateur won 1-0 at Appleby Frodingham whilst Teversal's disappointing season continued with a 3-1 defeat at home to Pontefract Collieries to keep them in the bottom four.
