NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #41
21st January, 2010
Leeds Carnegie have opened up a five point gap at the top of KoolSport NCEL Division One after winning two games in midweek.
Firstly, they became the new leaders with a 2-1 win at home to Askern Villa on Monday night.
Andy Cooper put them ahead on 38 minutes before Gary Mundy levelled for the visitors prior to the interval.
Chibuzor Chilaka grabbed the winner on the hour mark.
Then, on Wednesday, they beat hosts Grimsby Borough 3-2 with Chilaka once again getting what proved to be the winner with ten minutes remaining after Paul Harrison and Kyle Ross had already got on the scoresheet for Carnegie.
Michael Brown pulled one back for Boro on 85, adding to Michael King's first half strike for the home side.
Pickering Town are out of the FA Vase as they went down 2-1 at home to Marske United in the Fourth Round.
The Pikes were leading through a 48th minute opener from Jon Newton but Danny Brunskill and Benn Thompson made sure of the victory for the visitors.
Scarborough Athletic picked up an impressive win in the North Riding Senior Cup as they won on penalties at local rivals, Whitby Town.
Tony Hackworth had put the UniBond Premier League side ahead on 22 minutes before Ryan Blott levelled before the break.
That's how it stayed until the final whistle when a remarkable shoot-out saw Scarborough miss their opening two spot kicks and Whitby convert theirs.
But, the Seadogs held their nerve and fought back to go through 3-2 on penalties.
The NCEL's participation in the Derbyshire Senior Cup ended when Long Eaton United lost 3-2 at home to New Mills despite being two-up at the break thanks to a Kevin Mabon double.
And, penalties were needed in the League Cup Third Round where AFC Emley and visitors Brighouse Town played out a 3-3 draw over 120 minutes.
The home side won the shoot-out 5-4 to be the first team through to the last eight.
