NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #50

21st February, 2010

The title chase has swung slightly in Bridlington Town's favour after the Seasiders opened up a six point lead at the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division.

They claimed a 3-1 victory at home to Maltby Main whilst second placed Rainworth Miners Welfare were beaten at Selby Town.

Bridlington had fallen behind to a 27th minute Rob Branagan strike but were immediately back level through Ashley Allanson who then gave them the lead on half-time from the penalty spot.

And, the hosts had to wait until injury time at the end of the game to be sure of all three points, Nathan Hotte with their third.

Rainworth went ahead at Selby but had to admit they were ultimately second best as they went down 4-2.

Ant Lynam had them in front after just three minutes but the Robins struck back in awesome fashion with Steve Lyon finding the net twice and Stuart Dove also scoring to give the home side a 3-1 lead by the half-hour.

Cameron Fearon brought Rainworth back into it by the break but Brenton Leister's 56th-minute penalty made a Selby victory a certainty.

The Wrens have now picked up just two points from the last nine available but will refuse to get too downhearted as they still have two games in hand on Bridlington.

Armthorpe Welfare moved to within four points of Rainworth in third after a 3-2 win over nine-man visitors, Scarborough Athletic.

Liam Hardy converted two penalties to give the home side the win after James Walker had opened the scoring for them.

Scarborough found the net through Richard Medcalf and Scott Phillips but this latest defeat must mean that their title challenge is virtually over.

Nicky Matthews struck four for fourth-placed Thackley as they pummelled their visitors, Nostell Miners Welfare, 7-0.

Andy King, James Firth and Ross Daly also found the net as the Dennyfield outfit made it twenty goals in their last four matches.

Nostell remain in the bottom four in what was a bad day for the Premier Division's relegation-threatened sides.

Basement outfit Brodsworth Welfare's match at Arnold Town was one of six games in the League called off due to an unexpected cold snap overnight.

And the two sides above them, Lincoln Moorlands Railway and Shirebrook Town, both fell to defeats.

Moorlands were beaten 3-1 at Pickering Town, Tom Garrick got their goal on 47 minutes to cancel out a first-half opener from Liam Salt.

Wayne Aziz and Darren Clough then made sure all three points were going the home side's way.

And, Shirebrook held out until the 38th minute at home to Liversedge but Ben Hardy broke the deadlock and a Jamie Wasley second half brace along with a goal from Brook Newton made it a 4-0 scoreline for the visitors.

The only draw of the day came at Green Lane where Parkgate and Winterton Rangers played out a 2-2 scoreline.

And, Hall Road Rangers move up to thirteenth after they won 2-1 at home to Long Eaton United, Lee Macklin with the 51st minute winner.

The top of Division One has become even more congested after the leading two, AFC Emley and Leeds Carnegie, had their games called off.

Andrew Lockhart and Lee Burgess made sure Brighouse Town continued their excellent run of form with a 2-0 victory at bottom four side Yorkshire Amateur.

Brighouse are now level on points with Emley and one behind Carnegie, but they have played more games.

And, a Joel Birks hat-trick helped Staveley Miners Welfare to a 6-2 home victory over Teversal that moves them up into fourth, three points behind the leaders.

Ryan Damms also struck twice for the hosts whilst Jamie Smith netted as well whilst Ross Henshaw and Rob Orton gave the visitors some cheer.

Sixth-placed Hemsworth Miners Welfare have also kept themselves in the promotion race with a 3-2 victory at Barton Town Old Boys.

Adam Crane had put the home side into the lead on 29 minutes but Andy Haywood made sure the scores were level by the interval.

Gareth Barlow restored Barton's advantage early in the second period.

But the rest of the game belonged to the visitors as Jon Impey and Damion Liddle struck to gain three priceless points for the visitors.

Grimsby Borough put some daylight between themselves and the bottom two with a 2-0 win at home to Appleby Frodingham.

Both goals came in the second half as Nathan Ireland struck in the opening minute and Jack Debnam claimed the points with their second on 70.

And, Askern Villa were 2-1 winners at home to Glasshoughton Welfare.

Bradley Johnston put them ahead on 35 minutes and Tom McLaughlin doubled their advantage early in the second period.

Craig Fisher's own goal on the hour mark brought Glasshoughton back into the game but Villa held on for the win that moves them up to seventh in the table.
