NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #55
12th March, 2010
Armthorpe Welfare moved to within seven points of the top of the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division whilst Division One leaders Brighouse Town were pegged back in a busy midweek.
Second-placed Armthorpe were convincing 4-1 winners at Liversedge to move closer to Bridlington Town and still with a game in hand.
James Walker and Liam Hardy had them two-up by the 25th minute before Jamie Wasley pulled one back for the hosts just after the interval.
Craig Fletcher and new signing Jack Debnam made sure of victory for the visitors midway through the second period.
Third-placed Rainworth Miners Welfare lost ground as their poor recent form continued with a 1-0 defeat at Long Eaton United, Gary Breach's 55th minute strike meaning the Wrens are now five points behind Armthorpe.
Scott Phillips' last gasp goal for Scarborough Athletic saw them triumph 1-0 at Winterton Rangers and they are now seven points clear of Selby Town in fifth place.
That's because Selby were thumped 5-0 at Hall Road Rangers, Martin Thacker and Paul Wilson with the hosts' first half goals before Adam Walker, James McGarry and David Ingram made certain of the points after the break.
Pickering Town won by the same scoreline at home to Shirebrook Town, Liam Salt with a brace whilst Danny Gildea and Luke Jenkinson also netted and a Glen Holland own goal compounded the misery for the away side.
Doubles from Andrew Gascoigne and Craig Reading earned Parkgate a 4-1 win at bottom side Brodsworth Welfare, Nathan Bradey struck a late consolation for the hosts.
In Division One, top side Brighouse Town saw their winning streak ended with a 1-1 draw at Teversal.
Darryl Leach had put them on ahead on 48 minutes but Dave Cockerill rescued a point for the Carnarvon Street hosts in the last quarter-of-an-hour.
Brighouse are now five points ahead of second placed Leeds Carnegie and seven ahead of Tadcaster Albion who moved up to third with a 2-1 win at Appleby Frodingham.
A Robert Zand own goal on the hour handed them the win after Graeme Whitehead's 46th minute opener had been swiftly cancelled out by Matthew Robinson for the hosts.
Carl Fothergill's 81st minute strike saw Pontefract Collieries win 1-0 at Askern Villa to move up into seventh.
Eccleshill United moved off the foot of Division One as they beat visitors Grimsby Borough in a 4-3 thriller.
Two from Andrew Fieldhouse and a 75th minute strike from Ryan Wood helped to earn them the points even though Borough threatened towards the end as Robert Greetham grabbed their third as the game went into the last five minutes.
And, Fernando Moke's winner with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining gave Yorkshire Amateur three points in their 3-2 win at home to Rossington Main.
Grimsby Borough's league sorrow on Tuesday was recompensed, however, on Thursday when they became the first side through to the Semi-Finals of the League Cup.
After extra-time, their home match with Pontefract Collieries ended 1-1 with both goals coming from spot kicks, Carl Fothergill giving the away side the lead on twenty minutes before Lewis Buckthorpe levelled in identical fashion on the hour.
Unsurprisingly after that, the contest was decided from a penalty shoot that was won 7-6 by Borough.
Meanwhile, two goals from Peter Smith helped Dinnington Town get through to the Fourth Round of the League Cup at the expense of visitors Barton Town Old Boys.
Gareth Barlow also struck twice for the away side before the hosts progressed with Jon Somerset's winner on 68 minutes.
And, the KoolSport NCEL is guaranteed a team in the Final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup at Hillsborough next month after three of our sides booked their places in the last four.
James Baker's 66th-minute winner saw Hallam progress 2-1 at home to league rivals AFC Emley whilst Staveley Miners Welfare went through with a 2-0 victory over Premier Division visitors Dinnington Town.
A Ryan Damms penalty on 70 minutes followed quickly by Christopher Coy's strike made it a night of celebration for the Division One outfit.
And, Nostell Miners Welfare were 4-1 winners against Mexborough Main Street, Jimmy Jagger with a brace whilst Graham Marchant also found the net for the Middle Lane side.
