NCEL 2009/10 Match Review #57

19th March, 2010

The two sides chasing Bridlington Town for the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division title met in midweek ? and the result will have strongly favoured the league leaders.

Third-placed Rainworth Miners Welfare drew 2-2 at home to the team above them, Armthorpe Welfare, but they needed an injury time goal from Barry Alberry to make sure the honours were even.

That was after Lee Wilkinson's own goal on 85 minutes had seemingly given the visitors three vital points.

Earlier, Craig Fletcher had given Armthorpe a half-time lead which was cancelled out after the hour mark by Andy Jones.

It means the top three sides have now all got eight games left to play - Bridlington lead Armthorpe by eight points and Rainworth by thirteen.

Pickering Town moved up to six with a 5-0 win at the side they replace in that position, Selby Town.

A Steven Garner own goal followed by a Liam Salt strike had the visitors two-up by the interval before Daniel Gray netted the third, Tom Adams converted a penalty and Michael MacNaughton concluded the scoring late on.

Lincoln Moorlands Railway snatched a point in injury time in a 3-3 home draw with Long Eaton United.

Joe Butler was the hero as he grabbed his second of the evening just after an Adam Newton penalty had got the visitors dreaming of an away victory.

Railway are now seven points away from getting out of the bottom two.

Arnold Town won 3-2 at Hallam with Mark Smith, Chris Freestone and Chris Hudson getting the Eagles' goals whilst Joe Boggild netted a brace for the hosts.

And, it was all square at Middle Lane where Nostell Miners Welfare drew 2-2 with visitors Parkgate and there was a goalless game between Shirebrook Town and Hall Road Rangers at Langwith Road.

It was a mixed week for Leeds Carnegie as the second placed Division One side remain five points behind the leaders Brighouse Town but with three games in hand.

They moved to within two points with a 5-0 demolition of Pontefract Collieries at Throstle Nest, Matt Chilton and Andy Cooper grabbing a brace each after Simon Collins' twelfth-minute opener.

But, a points deduction came into effect on Thursday that moved them back to where they were at the start of the week.

Tadcaster Albion are now two points behind Carnegie with a further game in hand after they also won 5-0, at home to Appleby Frodingham.

Marc Thompson opened the scoring with a penalty before an Andy Sunley penalty and goals from Graeme Whitehead and Kevin Smith made sure the match was over by the 55th minute.

The two sides below the top three lost a little ground as they drew 1-1.

AFC Emley, who were the visitors to Staveley Miners Welfare, took the lead on ten minutes through Lee Hill but Joel Birks made sure it would end as a draw with his goal at an identical stage in the second period.

Jermaine Moyce's 37th minute strike was enough for Glasshoughton Welfare to earn a 1-0 home win over Rossington Main.

In the battle of the bottom two, Eccleshill United moved five points away from Worsbrough Bridge Athletic with a 5-1 win at their rivals, Declan Corby being the star of the show with a hat-trick.

And, Lewis Buckthorpe's penalty along with a 75th minute goal from Lee McFarland saw Grimsby Borough victorious 2-0 at home to Yorkshire Amateur.

Winterton Rangers are through to the Final of the Presidents Cup after a 3-2 win at home to Dinnington Town.

Liam Wilkin was the hat-trick hero with the third coming early in extra-time from the penalty spot to send them through whilst Ben Rosser and Peter Smith - also from twelve yards - netted for the away side.

And, Tadcaster Albion booked their place in the Fourth Round of the League Cup with a 2-1 victory at Long Eaton United on Thursday night.
