Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #55

22nd April, 2012

Bridlington Town are now five points clear at the top of the Baris NCEL Premier Division going into the final ten days of the league season - but they know they cannot start celebrating just yet as the title chase in both divisions goes down to the wire.

The Seasiders were 4-1 home winners over Brighouse Town to extend their lead over Retford United whose home game with Thackley was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Danny Nadiole had put Brighouse ahead on seven minutes but Tom Fleming had restored parity by the interval.

And, it was all Bridlington in the second period with James Bennett, Josh Greening and Robert Hawkes making it a comfortable victory.

Bridlington will be crowned champions in midweek if Retford fail to get two points in their two home matches against Staveley Miners Welfare on Tuesday and Thackley two days later.

But, it is looking likely the title will be decided when the two challengers meet at the Neil Hudgell Law Stadium next Saturday.

An injury time winner from Ryan Blott, his second of the afternoon, snatched Scarborough Athletic a 3-2 win at Liversedge and they move above Brighouse into third.

There was no other movement in the top seven as Winterton Rangers and Parkgate both fell to 2-1 defeats, at Pickering Town and at home to Arnold Town, respectively, whilst Staveley Miners Welfare's match at Lincoln Moorlands Railway was also a victim of the weather.

Long Eaton United secured their stay in the Premier Division with a last gasp winner by James Hunter as they beat fellow strugglers Maltby Main, 2-1.

Lee Whittington had put Main ahead in the first period but the home side turned it around in the last eleven minutes with William Mellors-Blair sparking the comeback.

Maltby have one game left but know that victory over bottom side Selby Town next Saturday will not be enough to keep them out of the relegation zone if Lincoln Moorlands Railway do the business against visitors Brighouse on the same day and then at home to Staveley on the following Monday.

Elsewhere, Hall Road Rangers came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Barton Town Old Boys whilst Tadcaster Albion won 3-0 at home to Selby Town with a Nick Thompson brace helping them to victory.

The Division One title will be decided next Saturday when the top two sides, Worksop Parramore and Handsworth, meet at Sandy Lane.

The pendulum seemed to swing Parramore's way when leaders Handsworth were beaten 1-0 at home by Glasshoughton Welfare on Friday night.

The visitors played most of the game with ten men but an injury-time screamer from Josh Corbett saw them take three vital points.

That meant that Worksop Parramore had a chance to go top on Saturday but they were beaten 3-0 by visitors Pontefract Collieries.

It means that Handsworth need just a draw in the clash with Parramore next weekend to lift the trophy whilst the home side must win.

And, to make things even more intriguing, the team that misses out on the title could also finish outside of the promotion places as Glasshoughton could snatch second spot in their final match at AFC Emley.

Albion Sports remain in fourth, one point ahead of Pontefract, after a first-half double from Aron Heywood helped them to a 4-3 home win over Teversal.

Yorkshire Amateur drew 3-3 at home to Dinnington Town to finish in the bottom two, a point behind Grimsby Borough who were beaten 2-1 by visitors Hallam in their penultimate match.

Marcus Edwards' 63rd minute goal earned Eccleshill United a 1-0 home win over Rossington Main to move above their opponents into sixth spot.

And, second half strikes from Julian Topliss and Daniel McLane saw Shirebrook Town to a 2-0 victory over Hemsworth Miners Welfare at Langwith Road.
