Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #58

4th May, 2012

Congratulations to Retford United who held their nerve to lift the Baris NCEL Premier Division whilst there was also glory for Handsworth and Grimsby Borough who won the President's Cup and Wilkinson Sword Trophy, respectively, in midweek.

Retford came into their final game of the season on Tuesday night knowing that a victory would leapfrog them over Bridlington Town to take the league title.

And, after an edgy first half, the Badgers took control of their home clash against Thackley to win 3-0 with Warren Hatfield, Carl Haslam and Karl Slack finding the net to spark massive celebrations.

We know wait to see whether Retford will take promotion to the Evo-Stik League.

If not, it will be offered to Bridlington if their points per game average is good enough compared to others across the country.

Scarborough Athletic ended the season in third spot as Ryan Blott struck twice and Tony Hackworth also found the net in a 3-0 win at Staveley Miners Welfare on Wednesday.

It was Staveley's second match in midweek as their hectic end to the season continues.

Christopher Coy's double had helped them to a 2-1 victory at next-to-bottom Lincoln Moorlands Railway on Monday.

Staveley have two more games to play - at Tadcaster Albion on Friday night and against Nostell Miners Welfare at Inkersall Road on Monday morning - as they look to finish in the top four.

The Division One season has come to an end with the final five matches played in midweek.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic played twice - drawing 1-1 at Hallam on Monday before a 3-1 defeat at AFC Emley on Wednesday - to finish in eleventh spot.

Two goals from Marcus Edwards helped Eccleshill United to a 3-1 win at Appleby Frodingham on Tuesday and they end the campaign in sixth position.

It was an emotional night for Hemsworth Miners Welfare as they won 5-3 against Teversal on the same evening, a match that was switched to Hemsworth's ground to honour secretary Mark Crapper who tragically died last week.

371 people came to pay their respects and watch a dramatic game that was a fitting tribute.

And, an Aron Heywood hat-trick helped Albion Sports to a 5-0 home win over Shirebrook Town on Thursday night to cement fourth spot in their first season in the Baris NCEL.

Handsworth produced a shock in the President's Cup Final played at Winterton Rangers' ground as the Division One champions defeated their Premier Division opponents, Barton Town Old Boys, in extra time.

Ashley Lattimore had put Barton ahead by half-time before Sam Smith levelled with a penalty on the hour mark.

Matthew Plant restored the Swans' lead but Smith struck again to make it 2-2 and Luke Broadbent gave Handsworth the lead for the first time in the 88th minute.

Ryan Cooper, however, forced extra time with an injury time equaliser and Smith completed his hat-trick, his second from the penalty spot, on 99 minutes to make it a 4-3 victory and claim a remarkable double.

Grimsby Borough also needed extra time to beat Shirebrook Town 3-1 at Parkgate on Tuesday night to lift the Wilkinson Sword Trophy.

Danny Naylor opened the scoring for Shirebrook on 34 minutes and they led until the 83rd minute when Luke Fanthorpe levelled.

Richard Creer gave Borough the lead at the start of the further thirty minutes and that was quickly added to by Fanthorpe's second of the evening to make sure it was the Lincolnshire side's night.
