Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2015/16 #63

24th March, 2016

Cleethorpes Town and Bridlington Town have kept on the pressure in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title race with victories in midweek.

They both moved into within five points of the summit as Bridlington won 2-1 at Athersley Recreation, Joel Sutton and Brett Agnew netting for the Seasiders after they had gone behind to a Danny Cawley strike, and Cleethorpes defeated visitors Liversedge with an opener from Alex Flett and an own goal from Tom Brook before Marc Cooper completed the 3-0 triumph on the hour.

The loss, meanwhile, leaves Sedge bottom of the table, six points away from safety whilst the other team in the relegation zone who played, Pontefract Collieries, picked up a point in a 2-2 home draw with fellow strugglers Brigg Town but it was not enough to move them above the dotted line.

The Colls were close to taking the spoils but Luke Anderson scored in stoppage time to deny them a victory that would have seen them leapfrog their opponents.

Matthew Turnbull struck twice in Pickering Town's 3-1 home win over Staveley Miners Welfare to extend the gap between themselves in sixth and their seventh-placed visitors to nine points.

And, Retford United are up to fourteenth after Bradley Johnston and Christian Savage both struck in stoppage time to beat Clipstone, 2-0, at the Jones & Co Stadium.

In Division One, Bottesford Town stay third and are now two points away from the automatic promotion spots after their 2-2 draw at Dronfield Town as they led twice through Danny Boulton and Jonathan O'Callaghan before they were pegged back on both occasions by Callum Mawbey and, in injury time, Alex Mosley.

Two goals from Gary Bradshaw helped Hull United to a 3-0 win at next-to-bottom Worsbrough Bridge Athletic who remain seven points behind the team just outside the relegation zone, Rossington Main.

And, an early Chris Spinks strike earned Westella VIP a 1-0 victory over visitors Winterton Rangers to move them up into fifteenth spot.

In the League Cup, Thackley booked their place in the fourth round whilst five teams progressed a stage further to the last eight.

Ryan Farrell and Adam Simpson earned Thackley a 4-2 extra-time victory at home to Eccleshill United after Luke Harrop had forced a further thirty minutes with his and the Eagles' second in stoppage time.

In the fourth round, Premier Division title chasers Tadcaster Albion also needed extra-time to get past their stubborn Division One hosts Grimsby Borough, Adam Baker with the vital goal in the 109th minute to give the Brewers a hard-fought 2-1 win.

Rainworth Miners Welfare defeated hosts Armthorpe Welfare, 4-1, with three Liams - Morris, Nelthorpe and Theakstone - getting on the scoresheet for the Wrens whilst two goals for Brad Walker helped Knaresborough Town to a 3-2 victory at AFC Emley.

Simon Harrison's 83rd minute decider saw Handsworth Parramore through, 2-1 at Selby Town and they were joined by Albion Sports who, thanks to a late goal each from Marcus Edwards and Arran Basi, knocked out visitors Barton Town Old Boys, 4-2.

And, Hall Road Rangers narrowly missed out on a place in the East Riding Senior Cup Final as they were beaten on penalties by North Ferriby United at the Roy West Centre in Hull.

Scoreless after ninety minutes, Martin Jones put Rangers ahead in the first period of extra time but their National League North opponents levelled after the interval and then won 4-2 on spot kicks.
