Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2015/16 #70
17th April, 2016
Nostell Miners Welfare earned the unenviable record of being the first team relegated from the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division as they were beaten 2-1 at Albion Sports on Saturday.
The basement club needed a win to keep their hopes alive of staying up and took the lead through Steve Smith on 37 minutes but Levi Maturine equalised for the Lions on the hour mark and Ferdinand Anoor's injury-time penalty confirmed their demotion.
Liversedge's game at Retford United was one of four games postponed due to waterlogged pitches so they remain next-to-bottom whilst Pontefract Collieries stay in the drop zone after their 6-1 loss at Garforth Town, Curtly Martin-Wyatt with a hat-trick for the home side who climb to fourteenth.
Parkgate eased their relegation worries as Jake Ashton's late winner claimed a 1-0 victory at Clipstone to move them six points clear of danger and they go above Armthorpe Welfare who went down 5-0 at leaders Handsworth Parramore.
Will Eades' 38th minute strike was the only goal of the game until the last fifteen minutes when the floodgates opened, Danny Buttle striking twice with Kieran Wells and Harry Groombridge also getting on the scoresheet to keep Handsworth two points clear of Tadcaster Albion in the chase for the title.
Tadcaster had seemingly been cantering to victory at Thackley as a Josh Greening brace and a further strike from his brother Jonathan had them three goals ahead by the 57th minute but Thomas Dugdale struck twice for the hosts to make it a nailbiting finale before the Brewers held on to win 3-2.
Third-placed Cleethorpes Town kept themselves in the title challenge with a 3-0 home victory over Worksop Town whose own aspirations of lifting the trophy are now almost certainly over, Brody Robertson and Luke Mascall scoring in quick succession around the half-hour before Mascall added his second in stoppage time to confirm the win.
Meanwhile, there were 1-0 victories for Maltby Main at home to Barton Town Old Boys and for Athersley Recreation at Staveley Miners Welfare.
Division One champions Hemsworth Miners Welfare took the lead on 42 minutes through Nash Connolly at Penistone Church but the home side roared back to win 4-1 with an Andrew Ring brace added to by Tom Cadzow and Daniel Joynes to confirm a play-off spot for the hosts.
AFC Mansfield are now five points clear in the race for the second automatic promotion spot after Phil Buxton, Ryan Williams and Dean Rick secured a 3-1 victory over Hull United whilst third-placed Bottesford Town saw their game at home to Dronfield Town postponed.
AFC Emley's hopes of finishing second are virtually over after a 1-1 home draw with Eccleshill United, Ashley Flynn's last-gasp penalty rescuing them a point after Luke Harrop had converted a spot kick for the Eagles, but they are guaranteed a play-off spot.
The final place in the play-offs is up for grabs for either Shirebrook Town who currently occupy that precious sixth position or Hallam who are a point behind them.
Two goals from Liam Greenfield helped Shirebrook to a 4-1 victory at Glasshoughton Welfare to keep them ahead of Hallam who won 4-2 at home to Knaresborough Town but the Sandygate side have two games in hand so must be considered favourites to take the final place.
Despite the defeat, Knaresborough still have a slim chance of gatecrashing the play-off party but they need to comfortably win their final two games and hope all other results go their way.
Next-to-bottom Rossington Main remain ten points clear of basement side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Selby Town who stay eleventh, two points behind Yorkshire Amateur who won 5-2 at Teversal.
The day's other postponed games were Rainworth Miners Welfare's trip to Pickering Town in the Premier Division and Westella VIP's home clash with Hall Road Rangers in Division One.
