Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2015/16 #71
22nd April, 2016
The Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title race will go to the wire with Handsworth Parramore enjoying a narrow lead going into the final week of the chase for the crown.
They had been dislodged by Tadcaster Albion who won 3-1 at Pickering Town on Monday, the Brewers scoring all their goals in the last three minutes through Andrew Milne, Jimmy Beadle and Adam Baker after Matthew Turnbull had given the home side an early lead.
But, Tadcaster then lost 4-2 at Maltby Main on Wednesday to give Handsworth a chance to return to the summit going into Saturday's matches, Lee Hill and Ryan Carroll netting twice each for Maltby whilst Beadle and Carl Stewart got on the scoresheet for the visitors.
And, Handsworth grabbed their opportunity on Thursday with a 6-0 home victory over Clipstone, Gareth Griffiths and Kieran Wells with two goals each added to by Jon Froggatt and Alex Rippon, to leave them two points clear with three games to play whilst Tadcaster have a match in hand.
Cleethorpes Town are still waiting in third, though, ready to pounce if the top two badly falter after their 1-0 home win on Wednesday over Thackley, Marc Cooper with the goal on 75 minutes, which means the Owls are four points off the top but have only two games left.
There were only two matches in a hectic midweek that affected the battle to avoid relegation from the top flight, Liversedge drawing 0-0 at home to Retford United on Tuesday to move them to within a point of safety.
And, Armthorpe Welfare were beaten 1-0 at Worksop Town, Conor Higginson's early strike condemning them to a defeat that means they are only three points above the trapdoor.
Elsewhere, Barton Town Old Boys picked up four points with two games, Tim Taylor's own goal earning them a 1-0 victory at Bridlington Town on Tuesday followed by a goalless home clash with Rainworth Miners Welfare on Thursday.
And, there was also a no-score draw between Albion Sports and Staveley Miners Welfare on Wednesday.
In Division One, AFC Mansfield are virtually guaranteed the second automatic promotion spot after a win and a draw for the Bulls in midweek.
Phil Buxton struck twice in their 3-0 victory at bottom side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic on Tuesday and that was followed by a 1-1 draw at Hall Road Rangers two days later, Grant Allott's opener on 55 minutes cancelled out by Paul Wilson late on for the hosts.
Bottesford Town won 3-2 at fellow top four side AFC Emley, Josh Nichols, Wayne Graves and Danny Boulton scoring for them before Kieran Ryan and Wayne Tunnacliffe brought the home side back to within a goal late on.
That means that AFC Mansfield need a point from their game at home to Hallam on Saturday to confirm their promotion place but they are still favourites to go up if they lose as Bottesford have to win both their last two matches and overturn a thirteen goal difference to deny them second spot.
Emley, meanwhile, confirmed a top four finish with a 7-0 win at Worsbrough, Ashley Flynn's hat-trick added to by a Craig Billington brace and one each for Alex Slack and Iwan Heeley.
And, Hallam will also be in the play-offs after two hat-tricks from Michael Blythen helped them to two home wins, 3-1 over Selby Town on Monday and 4-1 over Dronfield Town on Thursday.
There were also hat-tricks for Callum Mawbey as Dronfield thrashed visitors Hull United, 9-0, and for Chris Spinks in Westella VIP's 3-0 home win over Selby.
Champions Hemsworth Miners Welfare notched up their thirtieth league win of the season as Samuel Jones, Bill Law and Jason Yates netted in a 3-1 victory at Eccleshill United.
Worsbrough were beaten by two last gasp goals from Brad Walker in a 2-1 defeat at Knaresborough Town on Thursday, to make it three losses out of three for them in midweek.
And, Cleethorpes are through to the semi-finals of the League Cup after a thrilling 5-3 extra-time victory at Handsworth Parramore.
It was 2-2 at half-time and then 3-3 after ninety minutes but Caine Winfarrah got Cleethorpes' fourth and Brody Robertson's second of the evening on 118 made sure of their place in the last four.
