Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2015/16 #74
1st May, 2016
Bottesford Town claimed the third promotion place from Toolstation NCEL Division One with a dramatic Play-Off final penalty shoot-out victory over AFC Emley on Saturday.
The match finished 1-1 after ninety minutes at Birch Park, Terry Barwick's injury-time penalty for Bottesford securing a further half-hour after Michael Tunnacliffe had put Emley ahead midway through the second period.
Then, with no addition to the scoreline in extra time, it was the Poachers who prevailed from twelve yards, winning 4-3 on penalties.
It was a scintillating way to finish the first ever play-offs in the NCEL with congratulations to Bottesford and commiserations to Emley.
In the Premier Division, Brigg Town became the second side to be relegated as their 2-1 loss at Thackley saw them condemned to a next-to-bottom finish.
They had led through an early Paul Grimes penalty but a late double salvo from Thomas Dugdale, also from the spot, and then from Liam Hudson turned the game completely on its head.
Brigg and Nostell Miners Welfare will be joined in Division One by either Pontefract Collieries or Armthorpe Welfare.
Pontefract moved above Brigg after a 1-0 victory at Staveley Miners Welfare, Mark Whitehouse with the 27th minute decider, but are still in the drop zone, one point behind Armthorpe Welfare who drew 2-2 at Garforth Town.
Welfare twice led through Stuart Preston and Steven Garner but the home side struck back on both occasions through Curtly Martin-Wyatt.
It means that, with Armthorpe now completing their fixtures, a win for Pontefract in their last game at home to Handsworth Parramore on Tuesday would mean relegation for Armthorpe whilst anything else will see the Colls drop a division.
Before the day's play, it was possible that eight teams were still under threat of finishing in the bottom three but Retford United, Liversedge, Garforth, Parkgate and Athersley Recreation all secured Premier Division football next season.
Only Athersley failed to pick up any points but they surged into a 3-0 lead at champions Tadcaster Albion, Danny Cawley, Kai Hancock and McCauley Shilito netting in the opening 41 minutes before the home side rallied with second half goals from Carl Stewart, Conor Sellars, Jimmy Beadle and George Conway to seal a 4-3 win ahead of lifting the Premier Division trophy.
James Binney scored five minutes from time to earn Retford United a single goal win at home to Barton Town Old Boys whilst Liversedge made it four straight victories as they beat third-placed visitors Cleethorpes Town by the same scoreline, Vaughan Redford with their goal ten minutes from time.
And, a Joshua Moore hat-trick saw Parkgate beat fifth-placed hosts Bridlington Town, 3-0.
Elsewhere, there were also three goals for Jon Froggatt as runners-up Handsworth Parramore won 5-0 at home to fourth-placed Worksop Town, Danny Buttle and Kieran Wells also getting on the scoresheet.
Ryan Cooper got both of Pickering Town's goals in their 2-1 victory at Maltby Main which confirmed them as finishing in sixth spot, one position above their hosts.
And, Rainworth Miners Welfare defeated home side Nostell, 4-2, with two injury time goals from Jordan Eldridge and Declan Brewin snatching the win for the Wrens.
