20th October, 2016
Penistone Church, Selby Town and Teversal all provided upsets in the Third Round of the Toolstation NCEL League Cup in midweek as all three Division One sides defeated Premier Division opposition.
Andrew Ring netted twice for Penistone at Retford United in the opening sixteen minutes and, although their hosts rallied and pulled a goal back late on through Daniel Murray, the Division One tabletoppers went through 2-1.
Selby came from behind to beat visitors Albion Sports by the same scoreline, Asif Hussain opening the scoring in first half stoppage time before Jason Crisp and Thomas Hogg turned the game on its head in the second period.
And, Teversal won 3-2 at Barton Town Old Boys with Joshua Radford and Daniel Fletcher putting them in control by the 55th minute, Alex Wood's penalty brought the home side back into the game before Jason Gregory restored the visitors' two goal cushion and Wood completed the scoring with his second of the night.
Pickering Town left it late to win 2-0 at Hall Road Rangers, the Premier Division visitors beating their Division One hosts with goals in the last fifteen minutes from Lewis Taylor and Ged Dalton.
The other three ties were all Premier Division affairs with Bridlington Town, Hemsworth Miners Welfare and Staveley Miners Welfare all progressing.
Early goals from Gareth Owen and Joel Sutton saw Bridlington go through with a 2-1 victory at Thackley whilst Bill Law's 80th minute strike was enough for Hemsworth as they beat visitors Parkgate, 1-0.
And, there were two goals each for Tyla Bell and Adam Lee as Staveley cruised through, winning 5-1 at Maltby Main.
In the Premier Division, second placed Liversedge were unable to return to the top of the table as they were beaten 3-1 at Worksop Town who climb up to tenth thanks to a Connor Brunt double and a Charlie Dawes strike after Stephen Wales had given Sedge a third minute lead.
Handsworth Parramore have moved up to fifth after two goals from Kieran Wells helped them to a 5-0 victory at Garforth Town, Simon Harrison, Harry Bamforth and Connor Smythe also getting on the scoresheet.
Gary Bradshaw put AFC Mansfield ahead at Armthorpe Welfare after five minutes but Craig Aspinall levelled just before the interval in a game that finished 1-1.
And, Rainworth Miners Welfare were 3-0 home victors over Harrogate Railway Athletic, Declan Brewin, Matthew Sykes and Owen Heather netting for the Wrens.
Hallam are now third in Division One, just two points off the summit, after their 6-0 win at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Matty Ord's brace added to by goals from Tom Roebuck, Callum Greaves, Max Pemberton and Daniel Flynn.
There were also victories for Knaresborough Town, Grimsby Borough and Pontefract Collieries as they all narrowed the gap to the top and now occupy fourth to sixth place, respectively.
Tom Woollard got both of Knaresborough's goals in a 2-1 defeat of visitors Ollerton Town whilst there was a hat-trick for Jason Flint, two from the penalty spot, as Borough won 3-1 at home to AFC Emley and Michael Dunn struck twice as Pontefract overcame Eccleshill United, 5-3, at the Harratts Nissan Stadium.
And, Glasshoughton Welfare are up to twelfth following their 2-0 win over Brigg Town, Nathan Keightley and Ashley Scothern hitting the net for the hosts.
