Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2016/17 #68

6th April, 2017

All of the three sides still in with a chance of taking the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title won in midweek but Cleethorpes Town remain the favourites to lift the trophy.

The Owls top the pile, two points ahead of Pickering Town with three games in hand, after their 6-1 annihilation of fourth-placed hosts Thackley.

Brody Robertson set things going in the opening minute and Cleethorpes were four goals up by the interval as Liam Davis, Marc Cooper and a Peter Winn penalty put them fully in control.

Mike Garrod pulled one back for Thackley on 63 but a fightback was short-lived as Cooper grabbed his second of the evening and Andrew Taylor completed the scoring with nine minutes remaining.

Pickering, though, are making Cleethorpes fight all the way for the crown as they won 4-0 at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, Ryan Blott and Lewis Taylor putting the Pikes 2-0 ahead by half-time before Samuel Denton and Joe Dunnett added to their tally late on.

Third-placed Bridlington Town are eight points from the summit with five games remaining after a brace each from Jake Day and Andrew Norfolk helped them dispatch visitors Harrogate Railway Athletic, 5-1, Alex Knaggs with the other Seasiders goal whilst Cameron Lyn netted for the away side.

A double from Tyla Bell, the first from the penalty spot, moves Staveley Miners Welfare up into sixth after a 2-0 home win over AFC Mansfield and they go above Albion Sports who went down by the same scoreline to visitors Retford United.

James Eyles got both of the goals for the Badgers as they move off the bottom of the table, six points away from safety with three matches remaining.

The team just above them Parkgate won 1-0 at Liversedge, Christopher Howard's 58th minute goal sealing the victory that sees them close the gap on Barton Town Old Boys, who are just outside the relegation zone, to one point.

In Division One, Grimsby Borough have tightened their grip on fourth spot after beating visitors Dronfield Town, 3-0, a Danny Cheetham own goal added to by strikes from Adam Drury and Jack Wrightwick.

Penistone Church are now five points behind in fifth after they were held to a 3-3 draw at Brigg Town even though they led 3-1 going into the last ten minutes, Sam O'Malley and Lewis Dennison with the goals that saw the spoils shared.

Penistone are definitely in the play-offs as are Hallam who confirmed their spot with a 2-1 win at home to Shirebrook Town, Jack Hargreaves and Kieran Watson sandwiching an own goal from Tim Whittaker for the visitors.

And, it was honours even in the basement battle as Blaine Kellett equalised on 81 minutes for Nostell Miners Welfare after Daniel Walker had put hosts Westella & Willerby ahead towards the end of the first half.

Nostell are already relegated whilst the point has made things more difficult for Westella to survive as they are now eight points away from safety with four games left to play.

Meanwhile, there was County Cup semi-final disappointment for two of our sides.

Handsworth Parramore bowed out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup as they went down 2-0 at home to Frickley Athletic whilst Hall Road Rangers were beaten 4-1 by Hull City in the East Riding Senior Cup.
