Staveley Miners Welfare Dream of Wembley

28th February, 2012

Staveley Miners Welfare are preparing for one of the biggest matches in the history of the club, standing just three games away from an appearance at Wembley.

They are at home to St Ives Town this weekend in the quarter-finals of the FA Vase following an impressive run in the competition which has included victories against teams higher up the non-league pyramid.

It is Staveley's best ever run in the FA Vase and chairman Terry Damms expects to see a good turn-out on Saturday afternoon.

"It promises to be a great day at Inkersall Road," he said.

"There are at least three coaches coming from St Ives so we anticipate there could be a crowd of around 500.

"To make it through to the last eight is a fantastic achievement when you consider that 539 teams entered the competition last year."

A win against St Ives would take Staveley through to a two-legged semi-final as they bid to follow neighbours Chesterfield to Wembley.

Staveley are also doing well in the Baris NCEL Premier Division, sitting in third place after picking up nineteen points from a possible 21.

Meanwhile, Staveley's Inkersall Road ground will host a charity match on Sunday featuring players from Chesterfield's 1997 FA Cup semi-final side.

The Chesterfield XI will take on a Chesterfield College XI in a match to raise funds for the Academy Africa project, which is a UK-based football coaching organisation.

The match kicks-off at 2pm and admission costs ?4 for adults and ?1 for children.
