Wilson takes charge at Badgers
19th December, 2016
Retford United have announced a change of manager following Saturday's 13-0 defeat at Nottinghamshire neighbours AFC Mansfield in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday.
Darren Giovannetti has left the club with a statement from the Badgers reading: "Recent results have not been acceptable for a club of this level, therefore this change will create a new direction for the club.
"Retford United would like to thank Darren for all his efforts and wish him all the best for the future."
His successor is former Retford player Mark Wilson who will take charge of his first game at home to Armthorpe Welfare on Boxing Day.
Wilson, who has over 25 years footballing experience, began his non-league career at Frickley Athletic after finishing as a professional at Huddersfield Town.
Other clubs he played for include AFC Emley, Buxton, Harrogate Town, Bradford Park Avenue, Glapwell, Grantham Town and Worksop Town whilst he gained vital experience as a player/assistant manager at Ossett Town and, most recently, Stocksbridge Park Steels.
Wilson said about his new role: "Along my career, I have made a lot of contacts with players and managers who I will be leaning on to get Retford out of the trouble they are in.
"I am familiar with Retford as I played 28 consecutive games last season before joining local team Worsbrough Bridge Athletic who I will be leaving to pursue my management career.
"I will be a player as well as, over the years, I have accumulated nearly a thousand appearances, I am only thirteen away.
"I'd like to thank Worsbrough, the lads and the people behind the scenes.
"I gave everything to them as I have with every club and Retford United will be no exception.
"It's going to be hard but I've never shied away from a battle."
