NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #32
25th November, 2010
The first ever match at Grimsby Borough?s new multi-million pound ground proved to be one that fully lived up to everyone's expectations.
583 people were at the Bradley Stadium on Tuesday night to see a thrilling League Cup Second Round tie where visitors Scarborough Athletic came from three goals down to win 4-3 with the last goal scored in injury time.
The KoolSport NCEL Division One hosts got comfortable in their new surroundings very quickly as they raced into a 3-0 lead after just twenty minutes with Lee Stephenson netting twice and Luke Mascall adding the third.
The Seadogs fans may have thought it was time to go home but they were given hope when Michael Gibson and Graham Botham reduced the deficit to just one goal by the interval.
Gary Hepples levelled the scores on the hour mark before, with virtually the last kick of the game, Chris Jenkinson popped up to send Scarborough delirious and into the next round.
Eight other League Cup ties took place in midweek and it was the away sides that enjoyed proceedings a whole lot more.
Only Winterton Rangers and Long Eaton United won on their home patch and their matches were both tight affairs.
Winterton went through 1-0 against Leeds Carnegie, Kirk Frost with the solitary strike just after the interval whilst Long Eaton needed an 87th minute winner from Josh Williams to progress 2-1 against Nostell Miners Welfare.
Parkgate enjoyed the most comfortable away win as they beat Armthorpe Welfare 5-1, Craig Fletcher scoring twice with further goals from Luke Fletcher, Nathan Swindells and Ashley Worsfold.
The tightest was for Liversedge who played out a 0-0 draw after extra time at Brighouse Town before going through 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out.
Goals in the second half from Wayne Brooksby and Darren Clough earned Pickering Town a 2-0 victory at Thackley whilst Hall Road Rangers won by the same scoreline at Askern Villa, Adam Walker and Martin Thacker netting for them.
Maltby Main were, like Scarborough, the comeback kings, as they won 3-2 at Tadcaster Albion despite trailing 2-0 with eighteen minutes remaining.
Matthew Howgate and Nick Thompson had the Brewers in complete command by the break but Oliver Warren and then Greg Mason from the penalty spot saw parity restored on 83 minutes.
And, Daniel Jones then struck in injury time to make it a dramatic victory for Maltby.
Bridlington Town also booked their spot in the last sixteen with a 2-1 win at Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Wayne Wallace and Nick McNamara with their goals in the second period after Sean Cann had given the hosts an early lead.
In the Premier Division, Hallam drew 1-1 at home to Dinnington Town with Neil Longhurst's 64th-minute strike from the home side cancelling out Grant Allott's opener.
And, it was the same scoreline in Division One as Pontefract Collieries took a point away from Bottesford Town.
Ryan Poskitt had put Ponte ahead after the break but Martin Pembleton made sure the spoils were shared on 72 minutes.
Eccleshill United are through to the Second Round of the West Riding County Cup despite being beaten 3-1 at home by Bradford Park Avenue.
The Evo-Stik League side were found to have fielded an ineligible player and so have been removed from the competition with the Eagles reinstated.
There was disappointment for two of our sides in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Second Round as they were both knocked out at home to higher-ranked opposition.
Worsbrough Bridge Athletic lost 4-2 against Worksop Town whilst AFC Emley had a night to forget as they were beaten 8-1 by Sheffield.
And, in the all-NCEL Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Quarter-Final, goals from Danny Kilmore and Sam Smith saw Louth Town through 2-0 at home to Appleby Frodingham.
