NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #34

19th December, 2010

Scarborough Athletic missed out on becoming the third KoolSport NCEL side into the Fourth Round of the FA Vase as they were beaten 3-0 at home by Spennymoor Town in midweek.

All the goals came in the last 23 minutes and it means that Staveley Miners Welfare and Tadcaster Albion are the ones to fly the flag for the League when the competition continues in the New Year.

A brief respite from the big freeze allowed eleven matches to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday before the icy conditions returned to wipe out Saturday's action.

In the Premier Division, Tadcaster Albion were 5-0 winners at home to Hallam, a victory that moves the Brewers up into the top four.

Carl Stewart struck twice whilst Lee Cooksey's own goal gave them a comfortable cushion by the interval and Tom Woollard and Callum Ward concluded the scoring in the second period.

Maltby Main beat visitors Selby Town 1-0 with a 23rd minute goal from Charlie Weir.

It means that Farsley AFC head the table going into Christmas, three points ahead of Parkgate but having played three games more, whilst Hallam and Liversedge occupy the bottom two places.

In Division One, Yorkshire Amateur drew 0-0 at home to Bottesford Town, meaning Pontefract Collieries stay top of the table but the chase for promotion looks set to be a close one with only two points separating the top six.

Staveley Miners Welfare were 3-1 winners at Dinnington Town in the Second Round of the League Cup.

Danny Lindley had put the Premier Division hosts ahead on 32 minutes but Chris Coy restored parity for the Division One visitors by the break.

The game then went into extra time with Jamie Smith and Kyle Fores-Chambers providing the upset.

Extra time was also needed in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy Second Round clash between AFC Emley and Shirebrook Town.

The home side looked to be on the verge of going out, courtesy of Michael Lyall's 51st minute strike, but Steve Kenworthy popped up in injury time to force a further thirty minutes.

Mark Stuart then sent them through with a goal late in the opening period of extra time as Emley won 2-1.

Thackley and Pontefract Collieries progressed in the West Riding County Cup as they beat NCEL rivals in the Second Round.

Matthew Morgan, Ross Daly and Joshua McClean helped Thackley to a 3-1 win at Eccleshill United, their goals all coming in the last twenty minutes before Marcus Edwards got a late consolation for the home side.

And, Pontefract went through 2-1 at Liversedge, Craig Stephens and Jason Bentley netting for them whilst Rob Boardman struck towards the end for Sedge.

Brighouse Town and Farsley AFC bowed out at higher-ranked opposition but both will be proud that they pushed their hosts very hard.

Brighouse were beaten by a single goal at Blue Square Bet North side Guiseley whilst Farsley forced extra-time at Harrogate Railway before the home side's superior fitness told in a 4-1 victory.

And, Long Eaton United were knocked out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup, beaten 3-0 at Buxton in the Third Round.
