NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #49
24th February, 2011
Grimsby Borough have booked a place in the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Final at Lincoln City?s Sincil Bank ground after beating KoolSport NCEL rivals Louth Town.
They went through 6-3 in what was an enthralling Semi-Final at the Grimsby Sports Development Centre.
Scores were level at the break with Louth's Steve Norton cancelling out Andrew Taylor's opener on fifteen minutes.
Taylor struck again though and, with goals from Luke Mascall, Nathan Emson and Lewis Buckthorpe, the hosts found themselves 5-1 up with ten minutes remaining.
But, there was almost a fightback from the visitors when Buckthorpe put through his own net and Jamie Coulson struck to bring them back to within two goals.
Emson, though, gabbed his second and Borough's sixth to make sure of their Final appearance against Blackstones in April.
There was an extraordinary match in Division One on Wednesday as AFC Emley won 6-1 at home to Handsworth.
The scoreline may not seem out-of-the-ordinary but Handsworth had taken the lead after just six seconds through Alex Torr before Steve Kenworthy netted all six of Emley's goals, four of them in the last fourteen minutes.
Second-placed Yorkshire Amateur failed to close the gap on leaders Staveley Miners Welfare as they were beaten 2-1 at Eccleshill United.
Marcus Edwards struck the injury-time winner, his second of the evening, and Staveley remain eight points clear whilst Eccleshill move up into seventh.
Glasshoughton Welfare climb into the top four after their 2-1 win at Pontefract Collieries, the side they replace in fourth.
Their victory was even more dramatic than Eccleshill's as it looked as though the hosts were going to be victorious, courtesy of Luke Smith's penalty on the hour mark.
But, Andy Catton levelled with two minutes remaining and then, in stoppage time, up popped Jack Nodder to get a winner for the visitors.
Leeds Carnegie won 4-2 at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Richard Batley with a brace for them, and they are now ninth.
In the Premier Division, Bridlington Town kept themselves in the title race with a 4-1 victory at Selby Town.
Steve Lyon had them ahead by the break before Marc Cooper levelled on 64 minutes.
But, a Gareth Owen brace and their fourth from Phil Harrison saw the game go the Seasiders way in the last eleven minutes.
Bridlington are now ten points behind leaders Farsley AFC but with five games in hand.
Tadcaster Albion's challenge slipped as they went down 4-1 at Thackley, having led through Tom Woollard's seventeenth minute strike.
Callum White restored parity before the interval and then Ross Daly, James Firth and Luke Richardson turned the game the hosts' way in the second half.
Liversedge pulled away from the bottom three with a 2-1 victory at Brighouse Town, Darryl Leach redeeming himself with the late winner after his own goal had made it 1-1 with twenty minutes to go.
Lincoln Moorlands Railway won 4-1 at home to Nostell Miners Welfare in a battle between seventh and eighth.
And, Winterton Rangers are through to the League Cup Quarter-Finals after their 3-1 win at Appleby-Frodingham.
The Division One hosts put up a good fight and the scores were level at 1-1 with twenty minutes remaining, James Hare equalising for App-Frod after Liam Slack's early opener.
But, Liam Wilkin and James O'Neill struck late on to send the Premier Division side through to the last eight, alongside Handsworth and Pickering Town.
