Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #24

31st October, 2019

Albion Sports, Dronfield Town, Eccleshill United, Rossington Main and Swallownest are the first teams through to the Fourth Round of this season's Toolstation NCEL League Cup after victories in midweek.

Rossington provided the upset as the Division One side won 5-0 at Premier Division strugglers Athersley Recreation, Tyla Bell's first half double added to after the interval by Thomas Foltyn-Brown before Zephaniah Thomas applied further polish to the scoreline with a brace in the final twenty minutes.

There was no such hiccup for Albion Sports as they won 2-0 at Ollerton Town, the Premier Division side progressing courtesy of a Luke Aldrich penalty and a Cameron Lyn goal in the first period.

Eccleshill edged an all-Premier Division clash with visitors Garforth Town, the away side taking the lead on 25 minutes through Lee Turner before Jonathan Irving struck twice to give the Eagles a 2-1 interval lead.

Sean Hunter brought the scores level early in the second half but Lewis Sugden made sure of a 3-2 victory for Eccleshill in the 54th minute.

Swallownest were 2-1 winners at home to fellow Division One side Skegness Town, Richard Williams grabbing his second on 89 to take his side into the last sixteen after Gary King had levelled matters for the Lilywhites.

And, Charlie Stewart rescued Dronfield at home to Selby Town as they were trailing 2-1 going into injury time, courtesy of Joshua Walker's double for the Robins, and it was the hosts who went through after prevailing 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out.

In the Premier Division, second-placed Penistone Church are now only behind leaders Staveley Miners Welfare on goal difference after a 3-1 win at Bottesford Town who drop into the bottom four.

Jack McMenemy put the home side ahead but Shaun Mundy struck twice to make it 2-1 to Church by half-time and Nathan Keightley made sure of the points with sixteen minutes remaining.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare and Yorkshire Amateur stay fifth and sixth, respectively, but failed to make ground on Staveley as they both fell to 3-2 home defeats.

Hemsworth's came at the hands of Maltby Main who, thanks to William Eades' brace and a Gavin King strike, took home the victory despite Ryan Carroll netting twice for the hosts.

The Ammers, meanwhile, twice came from behind to visitors Knaresborough Town, Niall Heaton and Ashley Flynn cancelling out goals from William Lenehan and Colin Heath, but Luke Stewart got what proved to be the winner for the away side as the game went into the final ten minutes.

Goole AFC climb to eighth after Devonte Newman-Morton got both of their goals in a 2-1 home victory over Barton Town who remain in eighteenth, a place above AFC Mansfield who were beaten 4-2 by visitors Handsworth.

Joshua Dacre, Ehsan Mohammed, Johnny Pugh and Leon Howarth got on the scoresheet for Russ Eagle's men whilst Jack Warner and Ross Duggan got the goals for the Bulls who stay just four points ahead of bottom side Athersley.

In the two Division One games played in midweek, there were home victories for Glasshoughton Welfare and Nostell Miners Welfare to move them up the table.

Nathan Perks and Mark Ferguson claimed a 2-1 defeat of Retford FC by Glasshoughton after they had trailed due to an Adam Scott opener in the 40th minute and Welfare move up five places to eleventh.

Nostell, meanwhile, are up to ninth after a 5-1 win over Parkgate, racing into a 4-0 interval lead with goals from Calum Ward, Kane Reece, Jack Cowgill and Richard Collier before Tim Whitaker pulled one back midway through the second period but Rhys Meynell added his side's fifth from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.

And, in the First Round of the West Riding County Cup, there was an all-NCEL affair with Division One highflyers Campion beating third-placed Premier Division visitors Liversedge 2-1.

Shane Hamilton put the away side in front on 23 but Daniel Facey equalised before the break and Aidan Day struck in second-half stoppage time to claim a dramatic victory.
