Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #28

14th November, 2019

In a midweek where the Toolstation NCEL fixture list was once again affected by the continuing wet weather, the matches that did go ahead brought plenty of drama and goals to make up for the disappointment elsewhere.

It proved to be a time for great comebacks with Liversedge hauling themselves up from a 3-0 deficit at Handsworth at the end of the first half to win 4-3 and move up to third in the Premier Division table.

Marley Grant's double, sandwiching a Joe Parkin strike, had the Sandy Lane hosts well in control by the interval but Emile Sinclair sparked Sedge's revival on 50 before Michael Bottomley and Joe Walton had drawn the scores level with a quarter of the game remaining.

Walton then added his second and his side's fourth to grab a remarkable victory.

Silsden, meanwhile, came from 2-0 down at AFC Mansfield to take a point with an 86th minute equaliser, Laurence Surhaindo and Mark Everingham netting their goals after Ross Duggan and Brandon Webster had struck either side of half-time for the Bulls.

There was also a comeback in the county cups as Barton Town, like Liversedge trailed 3-0, at Skegness Town in their Lincolnshire Senior Trophy First Round clash.

Elliot Broughton, Gary King and Daniel Reid were the Lilywhites' scorers before goals in the second period from Craig Disley, Ben Hinchliffe and Marc Cooper forced a penalty shoot-out that the visiting Swans won 4-2.

In the Third Round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, Hemsworth Miners Welfare found themselves 3-0 down at Dinnington Town and almost recovered but goals from Metthew Hughes and Nash Connolly proved not enough as they bowed out of the competition with a 3-2 loss.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic were 3-2 winners at Shelley, Alfie Dodsworth, Kai Hancock and Ashley Emmett scoring against their North West Counties League opponents.

But Swallownest, despite taking an early lead from Alex Lill and holding out until the 51st minute, could not provide an upset as they ultimately went down 3-1 at home to Northern Premier League side Sheffield.

Asa Mitchell netted four times for Thackley as they dispatched NCEL rivals Campion 6-1 at Dennyfield in the Second Round of the West Riding County Cup with Jack Boyle and Owen Murphy also getting on the scoresheet for the hosts whilst Thomas Ponter found the net for their visitors.

And, Premier Division leaders Penistone Church are through to the Fourth Round of the League Cup after a 2-1 home win over Division One side Hall Road Rangers.

Kieran Ryan and Bradley Kemp struck in quick succession in the first half for Church before Charlie Birley halved the deficit on 63.

Of the matches that were postponed for waterlogged pitches, Selby Town's Buildbase FA Vase Second Round tie at home to Bridlington Town was called off for a third time meaning that, under competition rules, the tie will now be switched to the Seasiders' Neil Hudgell Solicitors Stadium.

County Cup games for East Hull and Hallam, as well as the all-NCEL affairs Bottesford Town versus Grimsby Borough and Eccleshill United versus Garforth Town were scuppered by the heavy rain.

And, the League Cup tie between Armthorpe Welfare and Knaresborough Town also fell victim to the bad weather.
