Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #31

24th November, 2019

It proved to be another frustrating weekend weather-wise in the Toolstation NCEL as only five matches were able to go ahead in what continues to be a very wet November.

Heavy overnight rain that continued into Saturday caused the postponement of fourteen matches, the vast majority of which would have gone ahead without any problems had it held off for 24 hours.

But, what did go ahead provided the drama that has been typical of the season so far.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare put a difficult fortnight behind them as they snatched a last-gasp 2-1 home victory over Liversedge to move up into second place in the Premier Division.

The Wells, who suffered the resignation of their chairman and manager in the past two weeks, showed great spirit to beat a Sedge side who had won their previous five league matches with Sidney Santos' injury-time strike grabbing the three points.

Oliver Fearon had put the visitors ahead on the quarter-hour mark with Edward Cass levelling for the hosts on 20 and it looked to be heading for a draw before the late twist in the tale.

Sedge drop to fifth, overtaken by Grimsby Borough whose 4-1 home victory over Goole AFC lifts the Wilderness Boys up into third.

Adam Drury and James Dean-Atkinson had them 2-0 up in the opening twenty minutes before Devonte Newman-Morton brought the Vikings back into the game early in the second period.

But, Drury's second and Joshua Venney's 80th minute strike put the game beyond doubt and Borough are now three points behind leaders Penistone Church.

In the day's only other top flight clash, Handsworth were 5-3 winners at home to Athersley Recreation, Kane Swinburn's hat-trick proving in vain for the visitors who remain stranded at the bottom of the table.

The hosts came from a 2-1 half-time deficit to take the points and climb to fourteenth, Anthony Mackie, Leon Osborne, Leon Howarth, Marley Grant and Callum Walton with their goals.

The games called off due to the bad weather were Albion Sports v AFC Mansfield, Bottesford Town v Yorkshire Amateur, Eccleshill United v Bridlington Town, Maltby Main v Barton Town, Penistone Church v Garforth Town, Staveley Miners Welfare v Silsden and Thackley v Knaresborough Town.

Two games went ahead in Division One with Adam Baskerville's double helping Armthorpe Welfare to a 4-1 win at Brigg Town that lifts them up into ninth.

Ryan Poskitt and Luke Williams also netted for Welfare whilst Jake Reed bagged what was an equaliser for the Zebras who stay in sixteenth.

And, Rossington Main are out of the bottom two after a 3-3 home draw with Dronfield Town in a game that was 1-1 at the break after Mark Fereday's opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Niall Doran.

Callum Mawbey restored Dronfield's lead on 55 but Doran's second restored parity again, Main then took the lead through Adam Watson but Fereday pounced once more to ensure a point apiece with thirteen minutes remaining.

Friday night's clash between Ollerton Town and Retford FC was postponed due to floodlight failure whilst the matches called off on Saturday were Campion v North Ferriby, East Hull v Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Hall Road Rangers v Glasshoughton Welfare, Nostell Miners Welfare v Harrogate Railway Athletic, Selby Town v Hallam, Swallownest v Skegness Town and Winterton Rangers v Parkgate.
