Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #50

13th February, 2020

AFC Mansfield and Winterton Rangers became the first sides to book their places in the quarter-finals of this season's Toolstation NCEL League Cup with home victories in midweek.

Only two of the eight scheduled Fourth Round ties took place as the remnants of Storm Ciara continued to cause havoc across the region whilst the Premier Division clash between Handsworth and Bridlington Town also fell victim to the weather.

Mansfield's victory was a hard-fought one as the Premier Division hosts were given a stern test by their Division One opponents Rossington Main and the Bulls needed a hat-trick from top scorer Ross Duggan to progress to the next stage.

The visitors took the lead on 27 minutes through Kabuya Kianga but Duggan twice struck quickly to make it 2-1 by the interval before Main drew back level at the midway point of the second period thanks to a Niall Doran goal.

But, Duggan's third - his 32nd of the season in all competitions - with under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining claimed a 3-2 win for Matt Chatfield's side.

The other tie that went ahead was an intriguing one with the tabletoppers in each of our divisions facing each other at the Hammond Homes Stadium as Winterton welcomed Premier Division leaders Staveley Miners Welfare.

And, it was the Division One side who went through, courtesy of a 3-1 win that saw all of the goals coming in the second period, Callum Foster's opener, a penalty from Daniel Buttle and Gareth Barlow's strike putting Rangers in control.

Jonathan Froggatt pulled one back for the visitors in stoppage time but Winterton progressed with a worthy victory.

Elsewhere, there was county cup action with Grimsby Borough making it through to the final of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy at the expense of league rivals Brigg Town.

Adam Drury's strike on 22 minutes was the only thing that separated the two sides in a tight contest between Premier Division hosts Borough and their Division One visitors.

And, North Ferriby are into the semi-finals of the East Riding Senior Cup, an own goal on the hour mark and a penalty from Jamie Forrester on 85 seeing them through in a 2-0 home win over Chalk Lane of the Humber Premier League.
