Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #57

8th March, 2020

The title races in both the Premier Division and Division One have become even more exciting after another dramatic weekend of football in the Toolstation NCEL.

Premier Division leaders Staveley Miners Welfare tasted defeat whilst the rest of the top six all picked up victories and the top two faced each other in Division One with Winterton Rangers winning at Selby Town to replace their hosts at the summit.

Staveley stumbled to a 3-0 loss at Knaresborough Town, Daniel Thirkill and Robert Youhill giving the home side a perfect start with goals in the opening ten minutes before Luke Robinson grabbed their third towards the end of the first period.

The win moves Knaresborough up to thirteenth whilst a third defeat in four games for Staveley means their lead at the top of the table is now down to two points.

Their nearest rivals Liversedge cantered to a 6-0 home victory over next-to-bottom Albion Sports, an Alfie Raw hat-trick added to by an Oliver Fearon double and a Joe Walton strike in a match that saw the hosts take a 4-0 lead by the eighteenth minute.

Third placed Penistone Church are three points off the top after Nathan Keightley's first half decider in a 1-0 home victory over Thackley whilst there were also wins for Yorkshire Amateur, Bridlington Town and Hemsworth Miners Welfare in their chase for the title or a promotion place.

Matthew Dempsey got the only goal of the game for the Ammers at home to Grimsby Borough who drop to eighth, and Bridlington were 2-1 winners at AFC Mansfield as they came from behind to snatch all three points with an injury time decider from Joe McFadyen.

Hemsworth beat hosts Garforth Town 3-0 on Friday night, courtesy of second half strikes from Seon Ripley, Kane Swinburn and Jason Davies.

Maltby Main go above Grimsby Borough into seventh following their 1-0 home win over Athersley Recreation, Gavin Allott's penalty with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining settling the tie that sees the Rec remain ten points away from safety.

Elsewhere, Daniel North's brace set Barton Town on their way to a 5-0 victory at the expense of visitors Bottesford Town with further Swans goals coming from Ben Hinchliffe, Callum Walmsley and Nathan Modest.

Eccleshill United beat hosts Handsworth 2-1 with Jonathan Irving and Marcel Chigumira claiming the victory before a late consolation from Callum Walton.

And, it was goalless between Silsden and Goole AFC, the home side moving up to twelfth whilst the Vikings stay in seventeenth.

In Division One, Winterton leapfrogged Selby with a 2-0 win at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium in a game that had to wait until the last ten minutes for its goals.

Luke Anderson netted first and then Craig Nelthorpe sealed the victory in stoppage time that moves Rangers three points clear of Selby but having played two games more.

The chasing pack, comprising of Skegness Town, North Ferriby and Campion, all won whilst sixth placed Retford FC lost ground with a defeat.

Skegness scored all of their goals in the last fifteen minutes in a 4-0 home win against next-to-bottom Harrogate Railway Athletic, Daniel Trott with a couple whilst Elliot Broughton and Cenk Acar also got on the scoresheet.

Fourth placed North Ferriby have kept themselves a four point cushion in the promotion places as early goals from Luke Lofts and Gary Bradshaw guaranteed a 2-0 victory over visitors Hall Road Rangers.

And, Aidan Kirkby's 75th minute winner saw Campion prevail 2-1 at Rossington Main after Daniel Facey's opener had been cancelled out for the hosts by Masassa Kianga.

Retford, meanwhile, took the lead in the sixth minute at Brigg Town through Adam Scott but the home side rallied with goals near the half-hour mark from Jake Reed and Ryan Thompson to claim a 2-1 win that sees the Zebras climb to sixteenth.

Mark Ferguson struck either side of half-time to give Glasshoughton Welfare a 2-1 win at Armthorpe Welfare to cement seventh spot whilst Armthorpe drop to twelfth, overtaken by Dronfield Town who beat bottom side East Hull 5-0.

Jamie Willis, Mark Fereday, Matthew Ord, Charlie Stewart and Daniel Wood netted in the comfortable win at the HE Barnes Stadium.

Oliver Grady grabbed a 78th minute equaliser for Swallownest in a 1-1 draw at Parkgate after Ryan Cresswell had broken the deadlock for the Steelmen whilst there was a 0-0 draw at Sandygate between Hallam and Ollerton Town.

And, Friday night's encounter between Worsbrough Bridge Athletic and Nostell Miners Welfare was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
