There was disappointment for all three Toolstation NCEL sides who took part in Saturday's Buildbase FA Vase action as they bowed out of the competition at the Second Round stage. With limited crowds allowed into matches, it was great to see spectators back watching football at our level, even if the results did not go the way our teams would have wanted.
Hallam went down 2-0 at home to Shildon with both goals coming in the second half in front of the maximum crowd number allowed, 150, at Sandygate.
Penistone Church's tie with Longridge Town had been switched to the DSM Memorial Ground but they could not take advantage of that as the game finished at 1-1, Nicholas Guest's 72 minutes equaliser cancelling out a first half opener from the visitors.
In the subsequent penalty shoot-out, it was the North West Counties League side who prevailed, 6-5, to book their place in the Third Round.
And,
Grimsby Borough were beaten 3-1 at Stourport Swifts, Thomas Hipwell getting them back to within a goal with his strike on 85 but the hosts ensured passage with their third four minutes later.
Saturday's results mean there are two NCEL sides left in the FA Vase with
Liversedge and
North Ferriby representing the Premier Division and Division One, respectively.
Meanwhile, a number of sides played friendlies in anticipation of the resumption of the league programme next weekend.
Luke Aldrich netted twice in
Eccleshill United's 3-1 home win over Brighouse Town whilst James Knowles and Jack Bennett got on the scoresheet for
Emley AFC in their 2-1 victory at
Liversedge.
Adam Scott netted a consolation for
Retford FC in a 2-1 defeat at
Staveley Miners Welfare,
Silsden AFC were beaten 2-0 at Barnoldswick Town,
Winterton Rangers went down 1-0 to visitors Cleethorpes Town, and
Worsbrough Bridge Athletic fell to an 8-0 loss at Worksop Town.
