NCEL Match Review #1
10th August, 2008
The new KoolSport Northern Counties East League season started on Saturday with a goal feast ? with 74 goals scored in just nineteen games.
40 of them came in the Premier Division with six teams winning away from home in their opening matches.
The widest margin of victory came from Thackley who beat hosts Brodsworth Welfare 5-0 thanks to the first hat-trick of the season in the top flight, scored by Chris Coy. Karl Wisdon picked up the other two goals.
But, they were not the top scorers. That accolade went to Hallam who were 6-2 winners at Shirebrook Town.
Six of the game's goals came in a hectic opening period with James Tevendale, Richard Patterson, Richard Carrington and a Dean Short own goal putting the visitors well ahead despite strikes from Lee Hunt and Adam Kimberley for the home side.
Hallam added two more after the break from Carrington and Tom Kotylo to make sure of the win.
A brace from Luke Sherman helped Liversedge to a 4-0 win at an injury-ravaged Dinnington Town.
Stephen Hollingworth and Jermaine Moyce added to the scoreline to make it a miserable afternoon for last season's Division One champions.
Bridlington Town, who are looking for a quick return to the UniBond League, were 3-1 winners at Hall Road Rangers.
Two goals in a minute round the hour mark from Craig Palmer put them on their way before Jamie Barnwell pulled one back late on.
However, Chibuzor Chilaka quickly restored their two goal lead.
Rob Eeles and Wayne Aziz found the net for Pickering Town in a 2-0 win at Lincoln Moorlands Railway whilst Dan Martin and Tony Law struck in the second half for Mickleover Sports as they came from behind to beat hosts Eccleshill United 2-1.
Defending champions Winterton Rangers had a comfortable start as they defeated visitors Armthorpe Welfare 5-2.
Last season's NCEL top scorer continued where he left off as Rob Northen struck twice, once from the penalty spot.
Long Eaton United won 3-0 at home to Maltby Main whilst Selby Town defeated Parkgate 2-1 at the Flaxley Road Ground.
The only draw on the opening day came at Nostell Miners Welfare who were held 1-1 by visitors Arnold Town who equalised with five minutes to go through Deon Meikle.
Away clubs had the better of the matches in Division One as well with six of the nine matches ending in victory for the visitors.
It was a good start for the League's new clubs as Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Brighouse Town and Grimsby Borough all won whilst Askern Villa picked up a point at Scarborough Athletic.
A hat-trick in the opening 51 minutes from Damion Liddle helped Hemsworth to a 4-1 win at Rossington Main whilst Brighouse were 2-0 victors at Teversal thanks to late goals from John Booth and Jordan Maltas.
Michael King, Richard Peck and Kevin Short earned Grimsby Borough a comfortable 3-1 win at Yorkshire Amateur.
And, Askern came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Scarborough. Andy Waulkden and Gary Evans claimed the point after the Seadogs had put themselves in control with two early Dave Thompson strikes.
Rainworth Miners Welfare conceded in the first four minutes at Pontefract Collieries as Craig Rouse put the home side ahead.
But, the Wrens then cantered to a 4-1 win with goals from Alan Jefferies, Jermain Hollis, Lee Soar and Malc Brown.
Lee Garside scored twice for Worsbrough Bridge Athletic as they won 3-2 at Tadcaster Albion whilst Bottesford Town were 2-1 victors at Leeds Carnegie.
Relegated Glasshoughton Welfare lost 3-1 at Staveley Miners Welfare whilst Barton Town Old Boys began with a home win, despatching AFC Emley 2-0.
