NCEL Match Review #10

12th September, 2008

Three KoolSport NCEL sides booked their place in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase with victories in midweek.

Five ties that were postponed at the weekend were played with away wins for Mickleover Sports and Thackley whilst Worsbrough Bridge Athletic beat visitors Cheadle Town.

Sports were 4-2 victors at Midland Combination side, GSA Sports, having raced into a three-goal lead by the interval.

Karl Ashton opened the scoring before Tony Law grabbed two to make things comfortable.

The hosts pulled one back before Robert Fox made sure of the win on 67 minutes, although Scott Devlin grabbed a late second for GSA.

Thackley produced a marvellous performance to thrash Wearside Football League side Willington, 6-1.

Nicky Matthews, Kyle Shah and Chris Coy all struck before half-time and then Coy grabbed his second and Andrew Fox hit the fifth before Jerome White's own goal gave the home side something to cheer on 74 minutes.

Thackley had the last say, though, with Martin Brissett finishing the scoring in injury time.

Worsbrough Bridge also hit the ground running leading 4-1 by half-time at home to North West Counties side, Cheadle Town.

Peter Hirst, Lee Poskitt, Craig Wilkinson and Luke Forgione via the penalty spot found the net for Athletic whilst John Hussain scored for Cheadle.

Rob Brocklehurst's spot-kick brought the visitors back into it before Warren Jackson's last minute goal restored the three-goal cushion for Worsbrough.

There was disappointment, however, for Bottesford Town who bowed out of the competition with a 2-0 loss at Brandon United.

And, despite a Matthew Jackson opener for Glasshoughton Welfare, they lost 4-1 at Seaham Red Star.

In the Premier Division, leaders Liversedge were beaten 2-0 at Long Eaton United with the hosts, who are now sixth, scoring both their goals in the opening 17 minutes thanks to Adam Newton and Alex Steadman.

A hat-trick from Liam Wilkin brought Brodsworth Welfare their first points of the season with a 3-2 win at home to Hallam, the visitors' scorers were Rob Ward and Richard Carrington.

And, Armthorpe Welfare won 2-0 at bottom side Lincoln Moorlands Railway with goals either side of half-time from Stuart Preston and Henry Sibenge.

Lee Mulroe's goal in the third minute of stoppage time earned Hemsworth Miners Welfare a point at Scarborough Athletic in Division One.

The Seadogs were two-up after 48 minutes thanks to Graham Botham and a penalty from Scott Phillips.

But, Damion Liddle soon pulled one back before the late drama which leaves Scarborough in second, ahead of third placed Hemsworth on goal difference.

And, Appleby Frodingham picked up their first win of the campaign with a 3-0 victory at Grimsby Borough.

James Hare opened the scoring on 15 minutes before Ryan Hibbard and Jonathan Nicholls made sure of the victory in the last quarter-of-an-hour.
