NCEL Match Review #45
22nd January, 2009
Askern Villa produced the shock of the midweek KoolSport NCEL League Cup matches as the Division One highfliers beat Premier Division outfit, Armthorpe Welfare.
A Mark Vickerage goal in the first minute of the second period of extra-time was the winner in a 1-0 victory at Manor Way.
Villa are now at home to either Mickleover Sports or Hemsworth Miners Welfare in the Fourth Round.
Winterton Rangers also progressed into the last eight with a 3-1 victory at Liversedge.
The hosts had gone behind after a ninth-minute opener from Andy Holt for Rangers but levelled soon after through Luke Caufield.
A Lee Ashforth own goal on 17, however, handed the initiative back to the visitors who made sure of the win with a third from Andrew Markham early in the second period.
Hallam were comfortable 4-0 winners at home to Thackley with Ryan O'Carroll netting in the first half whilst Rob Ward and Darren Holmes added to the scoreline after the interval.
And, goals from Nathan Parker and Lee Sutton saw Long Eaton United go through with a 2-0 win at Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
Bottesford Town became the third team through to the Semi-Finals of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy as they won 3-2 at home to Brighouse Town.
Steve Harrod gave them the lead on 44 minutes before James Leech and Paul Chatterton had them three-up by the hour.
But, Brighouse threatened a late revival with Wayne Crossley and a Carl Derbyshire own goal bringing them back into the game in the last ten minutes.
However, Bottesford held on to go through and face either a trip to Barton Town Old Boys or Staveley Miners Welfare for a place in the final.
Grimsby Borough climbed out of the bottom two of Division One as they won the only League game played in midweek.
A first-half Lewis Bookthorpe penalty and late goals from Luke Fanthorpe and Richard Creer saw them beat visitors Yorkshire Amateur, 3-0.
Shirebrook Town produced a spectacular result in the Quarter-Finals of the Derbyshire Senior Cup as the Premier Division strugglers won 4-1 at UniBond side, Belper Town.
Darren Bettison struck twice and Callum Wilkinson and Joe Naylor also found the net to send the Langwith Road side through.
And, Hall Road Rangers defeated Hessle Rangers 11-0 in their replayed East Riding Senior Cup Second Round match.
Paul Palmer, Adam Walker, Chris Spinks and Martin Thacker all struck twice in the biggest win of the season so far for a KoolSport NCEL side.
Leeds Carnegie drew 0-0 at the University of Birmingham in the BUCS Premier League North.
