NCEL Match Review #46

25th January, 2009

All four of the top sides in the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division won on Saturday as the title race hots up.

Mickleover Sports remain at the summit with a comprehensive 5-0 win at Maltby Main.

Four of those goals, with one from the penalty spot, came from their top scorer Karl Ashton who has now hit 25 for the season.

Dan Martin also converted a spot-kick late on to rub salt into Main's wounds.

Selby Town stay three points behind Sports after they pulled off a massive 5-1 victory at fellow promotion chasers, Bridlington Town.

They took a three-goal lead in the opening 25 minutes with Christian Fox netting twice and Steve Lyon also getting on the scoresheet.

Frank Belt's 76th-minute penalty gave Bridlington some hope of a late revival but it was Selby who added to the scoreline with a Brenton Leister spot-kick and an injury-time goal from Dave Nicholas completing the win.

The defeat leaves Bridlington in fifth place but now five points behind the two sides immediately above them.

Pickering Town are third but they were made to work very hard by their visitors, bottom side Eccleshill United.

An Andy Howland opener and a Wayne Aziz own goal gave Eccleshill a two-goal cushion in the opening quarter-of-an-hour before two strikes in a minute from Liam Salt and Ricky Greening brought the scores level.

Howland put the away side ahead once more on 22 minutes before another quick equaliser from Joe Connor continued the breathtaking start to the match.

Ryan Wood ensured Eccleshill were leading 4-3 going into the interval but after the break the encounter belonged to the Pikes.

Luke Ibbetson levelled on the hour before Tom Adams put the hosts in the lead for the first time with thirteen minutes remaining and Danny Drunton ensured the 6-4 victory on 87.

And, fourth-placed Arnold Town made sure of a 100% record for the leading sides as they celebrated their first game at the Eagle Valley Stadium with a 3-2 victory over Thackley.

Craig Mitchell made history by scoring the first goal at their new ground on 16 minutes and he doubled their tally before a Mark Clarke own goal and a Martin Brissett strike made it 2-2 by half-time.

Nick Hall's 56th-minute strike, however, gave Arnold the win that keeps them in touch with the top of the table.

There was a crowd of 238 at the game, setting a new record in the Premier Division for this season.

Long Eaton United move up to sixth after a 3-1 win at Liversedge who drop to thirteenth, Jared Holmes, David Wilkins and Lee Sutton with goals for the visitors whilst Elliott Williams netted for Sedge.

Four goals from Andy Holt, taking his season's tally to 20, helped Winterton Rangers to a 5-1 win at home to Shirebrook Town, a victory that sees the defending champions climb to eleventh.

Next-to-bottom Lincoln Moorlands Railway are still searching for the first away win of the season after they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at Armthorpe Welfare.

Gary Jones, Henry Sibenge and Kirk Wheeler all scored within the opening 33 minutes to make it a comfortable afternoon for Welfare.

And, Parkgate are now twelfth after their 6-2 win at home to Brodsworth Welfare, a hat-trick from Mark Caine helping them on the way to victory.

Scarborough Athletic stretched their lead at the top of Division One to nine points as a double from both Daniel Gray and Ryan Blott claimed a 4-0 victory at Tadcaster Albion.

The Seadogs also have two games in hand on Askern Villa who were without a game.

A 2-1 win at fellow promotion chasers AFC Emley saw Pontefract Collieries move to three points behind Villa in third.

They had to come from behind after Marc Townsend's 29th-minute opener for the hosts with Michael Long restoring parity by the break and Gareth Lewins grabbing the winner halfway through the second period.

Emley drop to fifth, overtaken by Rainworth Miners Welfare who won 3-2 at home to seventh-placed Barton Town Old Boys.

The visitors lost their keeper to injury in the opening minutes but managed to take the lead through Paul Burton on fourteen minutes.

But, Jermain Hollis, Danny Naylor and Phil Bignall from the penalty spot gave the Wrens a comfortable 3-1 lead by half-time.

A Craig Burdick spot-kick brought Barton a consolation in second-half injury time.

So, there was a mixture of joy and disappointment for Division One's promotion chasing sides but with only eight points separating second and seventh place, there is still plenty to play for.

Biggest climbers of the day were Appleby Frodingham whose 4-1 win at home to Grimsby Borough saw them go up four places to twelfth.

Lewis Buckthorpe had given Borough a sixth-minute lead before Cane Mawer, Michael Bettney and Ryan Hibbard put the hosts in control by the break and Callum Dransfield added the fourth on 51.

Goals from Paul Chatterton, Craig Mitchell and John Baross earned Bottesford Town a 3-0 win at home to Teversal.

And, Staveley Miners Welfare picked up three points at Rossington Main, with Ryan Damms getting the only goal of the game in the sixteenth minute.
